Hi, I'm Sprite! I used to do a lot of modular simulation using a program called SynFactory, but couldn't afford to get into hardware until just recently. Someone on the EMS discord recommended checking out AE, and I was immediately attracted by the sensible approach to everything. I've been getting a lot more serious about music recently and expanding my setup, and got to the point where a modular synth was the next big thing I needed, looked on Reverb and saw an absolutely beautiful 3-row system that someone had clearly put a lot of love into, with very nice panel art. I fell in love instantly, and now I get to start playing music with it. I stream weekly on twitch.tv/spriteguard and I'm looking forward to incorporating this into my sets once I have gotten used to it.

Hello!
I am primarily an animator but have always had an interest in making sound and music. I used to play guitar as my main hobby but that fell by the wayside when I got more serious about animation. I then went back to the guitar and the keyboard, but this time with a focus on just creating atmospheric sound for my animated projects.
It kind of plateaued there. I used the guitar with a multitude of FX pedals, a big Roland keyboard which I bought as a teenager, not understanding that it was not in fact a synthesiser! as well as manipulated found sound that I record from anything that interests me. For a long time this setup was enough.
However, earlier this year I decided to sell this giant Roland keyboard. I barely use it and it takes up a huge amount of space. I began thinking about getting a real synthesiser, and that's when I discovered you could get very affordable things like the Korg Volcas. I started with the Volca Modular. Quite a few purchases later I am afraid I am utterly hooked. I have already got a huge archive of sound experiments far in excess of what I could ever use for my animated projects!
So far I have the Volca Modular, a Bastl Kastle, Volca Drum and Volca FM, as well as a Keystep and the Bastl Dude mini mixer. I also have a host of guitar pedals, and my Zoom H1 recorder. Inevitably though I have felt the magnetic pull of modular synthesis, which eventually brought me here to AE modular land. I have not yet got an AE system, but I am further encouraging myself each day to enter this world. The fact that the prices are understandably going up in November is the push I suppose I had been waiting for to take this plunge.
I am thinking of getting the Starter Rack 2, along with a couple of extra modules. The VM bridge seems like a logical choice as I can then integrate my Volca Modular. I've already had lots of fun experimenting between the Bastl Kastle and VM. The other module I was thinking of adding is the spring reverb with tank. I'm particularly interested in things like spacey atmospheres and krell patches, and I just love the idea of having a real spring reverb. It's mainly sound design, experimentation and ambient atmospheres I want to make, but I do enjoy dabbling in more melodic sequences too.
I can definitely see myself expanding this in the future and certainly don't want to get them all at once since it is a large investment! I also want to save the fun and discoveries for the future to maximise my learning and enjoyment of this system for years to come. That said, any advice on other modules I should think about to start with would certainly be appreciated!
Please forgive my lengthy post and any lack of synthesis or electronics knowledge, I am an absolute beginner really!
Many thanks,
Will

Sounds like you're following a similar path to me! I came from bedroom guitarist world, started with Volcas Sample, Modular & FM and a Dude mixer after getting curious about synths, then inevitably tipped over into getting a SR2 It's awesome that you know the type of sound you're interested in - this is a real help when it comes to modular, otherwise the choice of modules gets overwhelming, it's easy to be entranced by whichever new module has the most colourful lights You're on the right lines with the VMBRIDGE and spring verb. In terms of generating ambience, lots of people will recommend the MULTIFX *but* it is one of the more expensive modules and you mention having a stack of guitar FX, so maybe consider the STOMP-IO as an alternative. For Krell patches you need a lot of random sources, so i'd suggest the Wonkysuff RBSS, then you've also got S&H as standard in the SR2 and a random source on the Volca. If you want to push the boat out maybe add another filter as well, i haven't used the Nyle filter but suspect it might be good for bandpass sounds (sure someone else can chip in on that)

I had a look at some videos over lunch. I will probably leave out the additional filter for the time being just because of the mounting costs! That should give me a chance to figure out how it all works. The RBSS sounds very interesting, nice to see I can get it from the UK as well and avoid the horrendous customs. (I am in Belfast) I was looking at the Multi FX but that would be something I'd look at more seriously in the future since as you mentioned it is a little pricey. The stomp IO I think is a really fantastic idea though! I'm definitely going to add that to the initial order. Anything that gives me more value out of existing gear can only be a good thing

I can vouch for the Stomp I/O, makes adding pedal(s) a doddle. Once you have your main system, an order under £130 total is duty/tax free from Europe (to Scotland anyway!), so I do little and often as the shipping cost isn't high, and the long wait for an order isn't so bad...... I personally would add the spring reverb later; it is a nice unit but quite restricted in what it can do compared to programable FX etc. It's fairly noisy too, (all spring reverbs are!), what may be an idea is to add a 2nd Lo-Fi delay so you can ping-pong on stereo, or just have a long and short delay at the same time, .

There was one B stock starter rack 2 on Juno but I wanted the black panels and some other modules so I bit the bullet. Plus the Juno rack was substantially more money to begin with so there shouldn't be too much difference. I ended up going with Starter Rack 2, Volca Bridge, Stomp IO and Spring Reverb. I have the Boss DD6 which I can run through the Stomp IO anyway so should be able to do some interesting things with delay, as well as a number of other pedals. Thanks for the tip about the tax free smaller orders too! Will definitely keep this in mind. I am incredibly excited to get my rack and start putting recordings up. I have been thinking of little else the past few days, and composing bleep bloop symphonies on my walks to work

Hi, I’m Alfred, based in London, UK. I’ve always enjoyed tinkering with musical toys. I have a mixed crew of them at the moment, including a Soma Rumble of Ancient Times (my favourite atm), a Bastl Kastle Drum, a LEP Multicassa, a Moog MF-101 I bought with all my pocket money back when it was released, and a half-broken Faemi M somewhere. So of course now I’m interested in AE Modular. I really enjoy patching my Kastle Drum and want more of that fix. I love to try and squeeze everything I can out of a device and find different ways of using them. I post jams sometimes on YouTube: youtube.com/playlist?list=PLt_aku90S9MesreQm5ESzbOoTJnrYtku0 (alongside indie tabletop RPG stuff which is what I’m most known for). Looking forward to going on this journey!

I think it’s underrated, capable of more than just the drone sounds people seem to normally use it for. Just wish there was more interactivity with external devices.

I believe it's due to Northern Ireland's unique position what with Brexit. It seems to be considered part of Europe for tax purposes when shipping from the rest of Europe. But also part of the UK when shipping from the mainland. So not much help to you unfortunately 🥲

I currently have this weird situation where I’m thinking of placing an order very close to the £135 excise limit buuuut as far as I’m aware I’m beholden to whatever the GBP:EUR exchange rate is whenever the order eventually ships; it could be under, it could be over. If I knew I was going to get taxed I might as well make the most of it and place a bigger order!

If you are paying by Paypal you know both currency amounts before completing, my credit card just says the amount in Euros and the estimated pounds "to be finalised"... Just in case you don't know Paypal also do pay in 3, where you paid a 1/3 now, 1/3 in a month and the last third in 2 months (min £30) - I let tangible Waves have a race to see if they can get the stuff to me before the final payment!

I don’t think I ever shared anything on this thread. But here goes: I’m Micah Hood. I’m originally from Fort Worth, TX, USA, but moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico for graduate school about 13 years ago. I’ve loved electronic music since I was in middle school. One of my best friends had an older brother who was very into 90s rave culture (Space Girl, DJ Irene, and the like). I was hooked. Being a band kid (now turned into a professional trombone player), i was happy to discover early on that there were more ways of making music than just making it acoustically. I got hooked on Fruity Loops 3 quickly after discovering that MAKING that kind of music was a thing. I still have my old demo albums from middle and high school somewhere… but I LOVED making music on that DAW back then. Through college I used FL Studio, but got really tired of it. Once I got to graduate school I was introduced to a local electric ensemble called “The Chuppers” (yes, for all you P.K. Dick fans, it’s named after that.). The chuppers were musical sculptures that were comprised of new and old musical equipment that you improvised music on. It was mostly drone music, but there were fun ways to explore each sculpture. Concerts with these instruments were quite amazing and cooperative. My musical life from 2010-2011 started to change from digital music-making to tangible hardware because of that ensemble. When I started managing the sound tech lab at the University of New Mexico after graduate school, I quickly learned that many students were wanting to have a hands-on approach to music making that was more significant than DAW and MIDI based things - not that those are invalid ways of making music; it was just something that we had not explored as a department before then. So, we bought a synthesizers.com system for the lab. It’s been quite amazing to see how that synth has been treated over the years by students an faculty. But, I, personally, wanted to find a system that would 1) do similar things like that dot-com system, 2) was portable enough for me to take to places like a notebook of sorts, and 3) was affordable for a guy who dedicated his life to music (in other words… I’m really poor ). One day, I happened to come across a post on my instagram (during the 2020 pandemic), and it featured the AE system. I marveled at it; how small it was, and how powerful it was. I forget whose post it was… maybe I’ll research that a bit more later. But, I became a believer that a small system could actually deliver such a great musical result. I got my starter rack 2 (with additional goodies) not long after that, and the rest is… well, happening. Thanks for coming to my Ted Talk

First post! I’ve done a lot of music stuff over the years; piano/ trumpet/ guitar/ bass/ drums/ ableton/ lots of bands. After about 25 years realised that what I really like is ambient-weirdness; musical, but just on the edge of noisy craziness (maybe it’s because I wasn’t allowed to play electric guitar as a kid!!!). I also like making music outside and have developed a fairly unhealthy affinity for anything electrically musical that can be powered from a usb charger (volca/ dreadbox/ cheap roland/ kastle/ microgranny). However, so much of this stuff is designed around a fetish for a repeating 16 step sequence which just isn’t my bag.
Finally dipped my toe in eurorack and realised I didn’t want to have to remortgage my house and I’d need to buy a portable generator if I wanted to play outdoors. Finally AE Modular looks like the answer to so many hopes. I’ve bought the starter system 1 from Juno as it was the only one they had in stock!!! Very very excited. Also everyone here seems really friendly and supportive.
As I say, very very excited. Thanks for having me!!

Hi people, I'm happy to be part of this community. I'm Marco, italian physics and maths teacher, using Arduino even if I am not very expert in electronics. Saltatempo (Jumptime?) from book title of Stefano Benni. A few months ago I discovered that I like creating sounds, listening to them and exploring this new world of generating sound waves with voltage-controlled signals. Before reading about this beautiful forum/wiki about AE MODULAR, I started my first steps with the Korg Volca Modular, which I will continue to use. Many things to learn! I thank those of you who share their sound and musical productions, and also those who have fun with DIY. See you and keep patching Sincerely Saltatempo

...and now my story begins! Hello everyone! I noticed the AE Modular for the first time on Superbooth 2024. I had a very nice talk to Robert and Carsten, a first look at the AE Modular System and I was happy and very exited. Because of that I decided to purchase my very first own modular system! It will be an rack from tangible waves! On the Monday after Superbooth, I spent the whole day looking at all products and putting together a suitable entry-level system for myself. It could consist of the following components: AE modular QUICKSWAP CASE 2-row 20U POWER SUPPLY ADAPTER 9V 1.3A PATCHWIRES STARTER SET (10, 17, 25, 40 CM, 6 OF EACH) MASTER R5 MIDI BREAKOUT CABLE 2OSC/d VCO FMOS NOISE GRUNGE FILTER NYLE FILTER ADSR (2 x) 2LFO MODULATORS 2ATT/CV MIXER 4-4 SEQ16 4ATTMIX XMIX 2VCA I think this combination is useful for me. If I forgot something important or selected something less important (for now), I'd be grateful for a tip. I have a few questions about this: - The FMOS is currently not available to select or order via the shop. Can I still order it? - Will be one patch cable starter set enough to begin? - Do I absolutely need the AE MODULAR BUS CABLE for the case I have chosen, or is the case pre-wired internally? I look forward for your answers. Sorry for my bad english Many thanks

Hey zapl , welcome!! Glad you discovered us at superbooth 😍 For the questions: No need for the bus cable with the quick swap case. Def get another pack of patch cables! (Maybe even a third one if you can afford it?, but 100% a second pack). Looks like a superfun rack, i would def add some 'end fx', either the Lo-fi Delay or the MultiFX. Maybe pick it instead of one of the three mixers you have? I do like a lot of mixers myself though, so it's up to you! No clue about the FMOS. I know Robert has been working on a new one, but might be a long time before it releases, not sure. If you'd like a Sine wave generator, either the Ms20 filter can make a good one (with resonance up), or my 555VCO (sorry for the self promo 😅)

Hello zapl!
Have you noticed the AE Modular Starter Racks yet?
I have one Starter Rack 2 since the begin of the Year with some addition modules! It is a really good configuration to start!
Currently there is no Starter set with Quick Swap case but the proposed configuration could be used for selecting your configuration. Also the Starter Racks have a nice price related to buy the modules individually!
I have learnt that there never are enough patch wires. For 20U cases take longer wires additionally!
