Hi all, just a quick note that having sold out of the first run of the mm33 3x3 matrix mixer, we've just placed an order for the PCBs for the next batch. Hopefully they'll be back on the webshop in a couple of weeks, but we've started an early notification list if you want to get notified when they're available again… There's a bit more information in the shop page
email us on: info at wonkystuff dot net if you're interested!

Hi namke, I'm so happy that this project seems like such a success for you! My package is still at sea apparently and I'm looking with envy at the people who are already playing with theirs. I hope more creations will follow!

I really feel for you admin haha I believe yours will be marked 002 (as I slipped in and swooped up 001 quickly, but I know you were on my heels), let's just hope 002 makes it before the second batch does!

Yeah, shipping does seem to suck rather a lot — I know that you anticipated it admin, but still sad to see

I'm having a lot of fun with feedback loops and textures - my first encounter with a matrix mixer! Some great examples online of people using them too - the minijack one with the crystal glass is fab.

Very nice... of course, this means that my 2SIGNALAMP has to go back in so that I can use the bag of contact mics that I bought cheap a while ago.

Where do you get contact mics? One example, with sockets to make it easier, although you can buy more for less if you are happy with just bare wires. I've used these through the 2SIGNALAMP and they worked just fine. I was doing some simple tapping and scraping of various household objects, then taking the sounds through the AE Modular and out into some effects.

Nice! I ask because I'm considering building a sound box to get horror movie like sounds.

Nice! I ask because I'm considering building a sound box to get horror movie like sounds. Last night, I spotted that Thorsten Quaeschning had one of these in his rig - I'm not sure I've seen him use it though. The unit did give me some ideas. Here's Ian Boddy with a souped-up version.

The BEST contact mic I've ever used, though...I can't find. It's an AKG (no, not the 411A, etc), and was this blocky thing that attached via a square of adhesive, and which is apparently a bit rare these days. Fantastic mic...I used it for a conceptual work titled "Music for Amplified Chalkboard", and it was QUITE effective at conveying that sound to the Peavey stack also used for the piece. It managed to capture ALL of the high, screechy partials that one needs to have for proper virtuoso chalkboard playing.

I think I was hypnotised by Jan's playing the first time

+1 for the ART USB preamp. I made a noisebox with a small wooden crate with double bottom. and I throw different objects in the box! It's fun with rolling objects like marbles or glasses...
The piezo-discs are less expensive, and you can mix different sizes of discs for a good result.
In attachments, the noisebox of french electroacoustic artist Anton Mobin (Anthony Robin)

Just had notification that the batch of mm33 PCBs has shipped, so hopefully will be able to take orders soon now! If you want to be on the waiting list, either message me here or email “info at wonkystuff dot net” (Quite looking forward to hearing some of these experiments! I shall have to dig out my contact mics too…)

Any chance there will be a 3rd batch? I missed out on the second one :-( Second batch hasn’t happened yet, so you’re ok I’m hoping that the PCBs will actually be arriving today, so drop us an email and I’ll add you to the list! (Although I’m going to need to fix the website first as I currently can’t log in to update the store )

timb0bsteve (and others) Just to let you know that the new batch of mm33 modules is now available for purchase on the wonkystuff website. Please let us know if there are any problems (we've just had a few issues with the website, so there might be some gremlins remaining). wonkystuff.net/product/mm33/Many thanks!

For somebody with absolutely no experience with electronics, how doable is the kit version? I'm fine with things like woodwork - is this a pretty good starting point for working with electronics?

Personally I don’t think that it is difficult; it is not a particularly crowded circuit board — maybe take a look at the video by admin here which is a great build video in my opinion

Will definitely have a think about it - really love the look of the module!

You really only need a soldering iron, solder and side cutters for this build. It's a good first project IMHO. In my video I'm not showing how to do good solder joints, but there are fantastic videos on Youtube about that.

That's why I was considering it really, just don't want to be lulled into a false sense of security haha! I'm trying to rewire a bass in a couple of months, would be good practice!
