Getting to a point where I'll need some kind of controller. The current AE is great, but I need something that will let me play rests. Much of the minimal music I want to play needs rhythm. Rhythm needs rests. Otherwise it's just constantly running eight notes.
What controllers have you used, and what do you like and don;t like?

The SEQ16 and SEQ8 let you play rests. It's the P (for pause) knob position. You can also create rests by turning off the clock that goes into a sequencer temporarily. Simply patch the clock signal through a VCA and open and close it with a clock divider or a gate sequencer running at a slower clock division. If you have the LOGIC module, you can also invert gate signals, which can be useful for such purposes. Using OR logic or a mixer in DC mode, you can combine several gate signals to keep the VCA open longer. You can also use the 2ENV module as a trigger delay to get rests that are off beat. So there are tons of possibilities inside the modular synth ... because it's modular

Maybe I'm doing something wrong, but when I set it to P for pause, it doesn't rest. It continues to play a sustained note from the previous setting. It just plays the same note as before. Am I doing something wrong? I want silence.
edit: Oh, I see. I have to do more patching in conjunction with the P. That's fine then.

There will always be a pitch signal from a sequencer. But there won’t be a gate on a rest, so this can keep an envelope from opening up a VCA for example.

Oh, I see. If the gate never fires, then the envelope, VCA, slew or whatever, the pitch will never make it through. Or a logic unit could do the same thing. Okay. I see. Okay, I'll just have think about how I want to use other components in the chain to do what I want. Thanks!
So what I really need is the quantizer to help with intonation, then work harder at understanding the envelope, VCA, logics and such. I was really hoping I would not have to resort to an outside controller because I'd rather take that money and buy more modules!
