Hi whiteturbo, the controller question comes up a lot naturally and you will find a long discussion about this here: forum.aemodular.com/thread/443/sq-1-beatstep-proI have also been looking at the perfect controller/sequencer for the last year and after owning, trying and later selling the SQ-1, Beatstep-Pro and Electribe2 I am now really happy with my Keystep and Deluge which handle all my controlling/sequencing needs. At some later stage I would love to add an MPE capable controller, like the Seaboard, Linnstrument or Continuum, but AE isnt' there yet and my finances wouldn't allow any of those options either ;-)

Wonder if Robert has any plans for that kind of thing at some point? If you don't mind programming your own scales and such the sensel morph is a cheaper option I have been very impressed with - early impressions with that (and the thunder overlay) are that it's response is every bit as good as my linnstrument, it just requires a slightly different approach. Apparently some people have made custom Linnstrument/grid style overlays too so that would give more freedom than the thunder overlay.

I have a beatstep pro, but based on what I see of the keystep pro -- I may need to trade mine in for that. The BSP is nice, but it's also old and I don't think they will be releasing any more firmwares for it, which is a shame.

I’ve been using a digitakt for the last few months. The cock signal is way too fast. Hard to nail with the beat divider. But it is great to control the ae through midi.

There are different standards and speeds for MIDI clock, maybe you can check whether the Digitakt can change the ppqn (pulses per quarter note)?

The midi standard is 24ppqn, which is too fast for most sequencing duties I have found — using the beat divider and wiring the various ‘reset’ signals from the midi ‘start’ pulse is really the only way to get predictable behaviour… if that’s what you’re after

Getting back to the OP for a sec...
As long as you're OK with NEVER asking ASM about anything, a Hydrasynth is fine. But if you prefer not to deal with abusive people who go signal-60 NUTS if you start asking them why the synth you paid for three months previously hasn't been shipped to Sweetwater and would you please give me some indication of when I can expect to see it, then I'd suggest sticking with the Keystep Pro. ASM ain't a small manufacturer like Tangible Waves or Bastl or KOMA et al, where I'd be inclined to let the company take all the time it needs, and yes, the above thing did happen. As for how that was resolved...I resolved it by calling Sweetwater and changing the order to a new Modal Argon8, which I'm very pleased with. And I like dealing with Modal; when I ask THEM questions, I get answers...not abuse! No, it doesn't have the poly aftertouch or the ribbon, or the CV/gate I/O, but Modal's reps know how to behave themselves, and in the end, I'd prefer THAT.

I've heard that about those ppl being rude... I recently bought the Argon8 as well and what a damn beautiful sounding unit it is. Unbelievable fantastic!!

I have a keystep and for me it's more than adequate for clocking the AE. It's cool if you also have a polyphonic synth ( I have an old Yamaha TX81z). I also use a Behringer Crave, which is identical to a mother32 and has its own sequencer. Throw in an AE MMDIVIDER and a SEQ16 and you've got a multitude of timing possibilities. Probably too many As funbun has already said there's alot of creative possibilities just using the AE standalone. I'm tempted sometimes just to sell all my other gear and just invest it all in a 2nd Rack2.

So I just learned that some iPad apps (like Beat Maker 3) will actually send midi notes. If you are looking to do really technical things, this might be a great option for a cheap midi controller (that is, if you have an iPad). I have BM3, and will be experimenting with it soon!
