Hey all!
Today I got my latest couple of modules (thanks as ever Robert, prompt and as reliable as usual) - the Grains module and the MS20 filter.
So far, I have the starter rack 2, an extra VCO, a 4I/O, a wave folder and now these two.
Although I class myself very much a newbie regarding modular synthesis, I've been into synths for many years, and have a few different ones (hence, the 4I/O module). I have the Wasp filter and the SV filter. But nothing prepared me for what the MS20 filter had to offer. Oh boy.
I mostly tinker with pop and electronic dance. As with any mixing or recording, getting the right sound that sits in the mix and doesn't obfuscate things is I feel, the major part of the battle, and sometimes in can be a real bitch, and probably THE biggest hurdle when starting out and learning to combine sounds together. You can create a truly awesome biting lead sound, only to find that it bleeds all over every other sound you try, leaving you at a dead end. Of course, you can mitigate with EQ tweaking and compression (and you should) but you will ALWAYS invariably find yourselg in a balancing act of either narrowing the badnwidth of your inidividual patch or scrapping it entirely.
If you've been there, don't be embarrassed - it's just how things are!
My epiphany about the MS20 filter was that I didn't realise just how much it changed EVERY sound I put through it. I've used an MS20 before (long ago in the early 90s at University) but I never realised just how good and different this filter is. I spent the whole afternoon mixing my Arturia Microfreak with the AEM with just a basic sharpish sawtooth patch through the MS20 filter, and just for kicks I went through every stored pattenr in my Microfreak and just a tiny tweak on the MS20 filter made it sit fine over everything I threw at it.
So my advice to any other newbie users out there and newbie mixers - get this filter as soon as you can! Don't be dissuaded in thinking that you already have one or two of the others, this is a must in my book as it's truly a life-saver.
I never realised how something so apparently straightforward a module as this could be so important.
I hope someone finds this post of use and gets what I mean.
