Rack Breakout Boxes - my addiction to dominoes boxes

Trust a former tobacconist here (who still smokes a helluva lot of cigars): if you opt for a cigar box, DO NOT build anything electronic in it without leaving the box to air-dry for about 10-14 days FIRST. Cigar boxes tend to be infused with moisture at similar humidity levels to the humidor they came out of (because the cigars NEED that), and humidity isn't friendly to electronics. So, that box you're thinking of making into a sequencer-specific cab has been immersed into a 70% (ish) humidity level for, potentially, months if not longer.

Since we constantly had to tell people to never, ever, ever, ever, EVER put their cigars in the refrigerator, because refrigerators will suck the moisture out of them...well, that's a perfect thing to do to correct the humidity in the box's wood. Open it up, stick it in the fridge, leave it for that amount of time. This also helps to weed out BAD boxes, because if they have weak woodgrain or are badly-constructed, they'll crack and split under those conditions. You definitely don't want those.

And they smell wonderful, because they're made from Spanish Cedar. But there IS one important thing that I also need to point out about working with THAT WOOD in particular:

If you do anything with Spanish Cedar that involves generating any quantity of sawdust, AVOID BREATHING THAT SAWDUST!!! Even though it smells wonderful and, when it's solid wood, it's quite safe...the SAWDUST from Spanish Cedar is CARCINOGENIC. Always wear a dust mask when doing anything with that wood! Also, I suggest blasting whatever you'd been working on with some canned air before putting anything in it, and you might want to clean whatever tools you used with the same thing.

In case you're wondering, no, Spanish Cedar isn't actually related to anything we'd call "cedar" in temperate regions. It's actually a very different tree, and the same resins in it that cogenerate delicious flavors when combined with the outgassings from the cigars in the box are ALSO the same culprit in the cancer hazard. Once they combine, they're fine, and as long as the resin isn't airborne, it's also fine. It's sort of like Niacin: it's an essential vitamin, 100% necessary for life...but part of its chemical constituent is NICOTINE, which is quite toxic in of itself! It just depends on what you do with it.
