Hey! Hope you're all well. Well today's the day for me, my AE Modular system arrived - I'm absolutely loving the machine, finding it great fun getting to grips with it. I'm new to modular synthesis and this is exactly the gateway I've been looking for, I've never been able to justify Eurorack prices. Just one main question springs to mind, what do most people use the 2OSC/d module for? I'm using the VCO as a melodic OSC as recommended, but am struggling to think of what to do with the spare module - drones? noisy random sequences?
Looking forward to being a part of the community! :-)

Hi, welcome to the AE family! Basically, the 2OSC/d can be used for the same purposes as the VCO; the difference is, that it is a digital/analog hybrid so the sound is a bit different compared to the pure analog VCO. Just experiment and get familiar with it; with modular, everything is allowed, there is no right or wrong. So far my 3 cents, I'm sure other forum members can give more detailed advice from their musical use.

Got a pile of the 2OSCs...my use for them is mainly to FM the other VCOs at audio rates, which I can either do straight OR via a VCA to ramp the signal in and out. But that's just ONE use...and there are oh, so many others...

You can't have too many oscillators, check out this drone that I made with 5 oscillators (that's 2x OSC/d and 1x VCO) + the Solina.

You can also use them to fatten up your sound. Play all three VCOs together from the same pitch CV source, detune them slightly and mix them before sending the audio through VCF and VCA. That’s how “super saws” are made

Amazing, cheers! I tried playing them all together this morning but am finding that the 2OSC/d is slightly going out of tune I think - is that something to work around? I've overcome it by modulating pitch with a slow LFO fed through the ATT, which is a cool sound!

How many oscillators are you trying to drive with the same CV at one time? Rule of thumb says that if it's more than three, you might need some CV buffering to maintain proper scaling. And that's a problem across ALL modular synths, btw...but fortunately, Robert's got those of us in AEland trying to do this sort of hyperlayered craziness covered with the new 4BUFFER.

I don't think so - seems to be the same with just the module by itself. Loving the sound of it though, so warm and gooey. Got the hang of it a lot more today, managed to make a cool noisy rhythmic sequence using the topograf - glad I added a couple of modules to the starter rack!

Yeah, the 2/OSC I use for frequency modulation and making soundscapes rather than the western-tempered music. It's hard to tune the 2/OSC for lack of a fine tune adjustment.
The good thing is they do hold pitch well. The analog VCO floats a bit over time as the oscillator heats up. I have three analog VCOs shipping now.

Whereas I only use the 2OSC/D for melodic stuff, because I don't like how the VCO drifts! I whacked some bigger knobs on the tuning pots so I could tap them into tune more easily. Made sure the scaling was good over three octaves and away to the races!

Welcome MaxRichardson97! I definitely felt that same learning curve you are feeling now. But keep at it! Things will just *click* soon and all of the sudden you'll know exactly how to patch the sound you want In the mean time, explore, and discover new and unintended sounds! I think that's important for even a seasoned artist! bearheadwood My music must sound horrible to audiophiles, I don't even notice the drift XD VCO is my favorite though, such a nice sound, especially on the triangle wave, closest thing we have to a sine!
