Hey Folks!
My name is Tobi and Im happy to finally join the AE community.
My AE Story is easily told.
I always had friends who were makig beats or were doing some dj related stuff. So there always was a connection to making music somehow. But all the times I tried making music, I mostly only used software but never really got into it. I just thought: "Okay thats not your thing." Maybe I was thinking like that because I´ve been doing other art and desgin stuff anyways which kept me creativly busy at this time. But there always were small occasions where I did some "Soundfiddeling" , like making a beat with a gameboy camera or creating soundeffects or digging samples for a video. Then I made some Partys together with friends and somehow got into VJing and did this on some of our and other small events and raves for some months.
But then...then i discovered the joy of using a hardware synth. One of the friends I did the partys with allready had sticked his nose a little bit into modular and bought a roland tr-08 together with an other homie of us. I cant really rememder what was the spark that lighted up the SynthFire in me, but suddenly i desperatly wanted to have a korg volca sample. And this one friend and me now started digging everything synth related and sharing our interests all the time, while planing which stuff we add next to our "jamsetup".
After I got a used volca sample, the next 3 pocket operators joined the party soon. Add all 3 montrons and ipad to the mix and i already had nice and fun portable setup. I think this started all around 1-2years ago. And since then i couldnt stop reading stuff about soundsynthesis. And from the start of this there always was the wish to have a portable modular system that i could integrate into my "jambox"
I dont really know when exactly I discovered AE, but I think it was pretty soon after my passion for synths started growing. And I thought: "WOW! There is something reachable...."
But at this moment i wasnt ready to own a modular analog synth, I still had to learn more. Almost started screaming one of the sellers in the
musicstore just because i was to dump to figure out a modular synth XD.
So I started creeping around in this forum as a silent watcher for quiet a while now (haha silent - quiet get it? haha ;P ) and learned a ton of things here
while readying a lot of ur posts watching the shared videos and follwing the links. This is such a frikking great community. <3
I got deeper and deeper into the materia every day also by starting some breadboarding and dying.
And on some point that all wasnt enough anymore and i wrote Robert an email and asked if he could imagine getting some more help in his workshop. He could so i went to bavarya last december and now i got my offically soldering pro medal but I also learned a hell lot of other things and we had a great time. Since I got my first System I´ve been patching quiet a lot. And its like some kind of meditation for me. Next week i will get an old Irig midi Interface. Exited about controlling my AE with TouchOSC.
There is still a lot to discover. Nice we got a place to share our discoverys.
Cheers.

In the year 2018 i met Robbie Langer on the Synthematik a Synthesizer meetup in Munich, Germany and i saw the first Prototypes of the System, Explores it and could Talk with Robbie about it. I order a first System. After that i saw him back in 2019 on superbooth in berlin and see the new Release Version of the system, and it was amazing, i was flashed and order the complete new System. After all i get my System last week and im totally flashed again...again!!!

Just ordered my Starter Rack 2 plus some extras. I was looking at eurorack for quite a while but concluded that it's just too vast and too expensive for me (even using DIY modules). I also been playing with VCVRACK for an age and although I think it's a brilliant platform there is no real hands-on feel even with external controllers and you need a laptop to run it anyway. Still it's great for testing and storing patch ideas etc. My current set-up comprises a Korg minilogue synth, Behringer Neutron semi-modular with an Arturia Keystep. Still learning how to make sounds with both synths and hope to use the Neutron alongside the AE Rack. I use the Neutron and AE together, you'll have fun!

Hello All.
My name is Carl and I run a project called Black Hair Rolled In Dried Blood. People ask me me about the name, but the story is that the project was originally called 'Elugelab'., named, rather apologetically after the island which was decimated by the first hydrogen bomb testing. I was pretty sure no-one else had heard of this name either, until a year later when somebody contacted me ans said 'Hi, I'm called Elugelab too!', so now, I'm pretty sure no-one is going to coincidentally call themselves 'Black Hair Rolled In Dried Blood'. Its too long to type and normally doesn't fit on one line of an email address..... (there are other reasons for the name too).
I love my AE Modular system - its a dream come true. I have no idea of music theory and my timing is terrible. I am a visual artist, however, and love recording all manner of sounds and noises. Visual art is my critical basis, but of course there are many crossovers in this integrated world - Harmony/The Golden Section, Rule of thirds/triplets/fifths/ninths etc. I distribute tracks on my Bandcamp page, most of which are one take improvisations and you are free to explore these as you like. (This is not a plug btw!).
I have been reading this forum for a while, I couldn't get on to it for ages, but now I have a shiny new Mac and here I am. its great to see such good support for a wonderful platform as AE Modular. I have learnt a lot form the fantastic responses to questions and informative videos that are here an particularly enjoying some of the sound works I have heard and downloaded from places like Bandcamp.
My kitten, Meyou, loves it too.
Best wishes to you all.

That is hilarious and true! I had an MRI scan a while back and it does sound like some of the bleeps and bloops I make frequently.

Lots of weird "Zztzztzztzztzztzzt" rhythms and disturbing mechanical noises. I'd LOVE to record one while it's in use, but there are definitely certain dangers in having a microphone in the same room with one while it's energized. See here:
If an MRI machine can do that to a stapler, what might it do with a Shure 57? Too scary...

I remember they had a FMRI where I worked in Japan. If testing your response to audio, they would use ceramic earphones with a plastic tube from a speaker driver some distance away. I think they had a microphone that worked the same way.

Hello,
I play synth for fun (I have an old analog roland HS1) and I was curious about modular synth, but Always founded it was out of my budget. When I saw the Kickstarter campaign by Robert I took the 1 rack; since now is the best project I've backed on KS.

When I saw the Kickstarter campaign by Robert I took the 1 rack; since now is the best project I've backed on KS. The only project I've ever backed on kickstarter and what a win! I now have 3 full racks and "need" another for the solina etc... It's stopped me actually completing songs but I'm enjoying myself which is why 99.9% of us do this. :-)

Hi Folks,
since the forum exists I wanted to introduce myself here. But somehow I have not made it until now...
Hello, my name is Moritz, I live in Germany near Munich and I make music simply because it does me good. I have had 12 years of piano lessons, but always preferred to improvise from the belly. I learn everything simply by doing and experimenting. Reading music has always been very difficult for me, my brain works differently. Especially in the current time, making music just helps me a lot. It is a bit like meditating for me. When I make music, I forget time and everything else. I first met Robert and the AE modular in 2017 at the Make Munich. (Munich's Maker Festival - where I'm also part of the team) At that time I had almost no idea what a modular synthesizer is. Robert explained it to me briefly, I played with it a bit and then I knew - it's perfect for me, for my music and my way of thinking! And so I started my journey into the world of modular synthesizers. If you are interested, you can check my Soundcloud or Youtube channel. My Soundcloud is pretty outdated, but hopefully there will be something new soon. Because Corona let to a lot of recordings I need to listen to and find the nice bits… Ciao Ciao, Moritz

Hello everyone! I landed at AE Modular because I have started my journey about getting into modular for some years now, but the way to go was eurorack and it was sooo much and sooo confusing about what to buy and what not, the prices were too expensive to make failures in buying that I always kept looking and never buying. Now, after I have read about AE Modular and seen some videos on Youtube I startet to wonder that maybe that was my way in to modular? So now I am here and trying to understand what will be my setup to buy and start this amazing journey into modular system with AE Modular instead of eurorack. I use Ableton Live 10 Suite with Ableton Push 2, all the U-he plugins, all the Komplete plugins plus all the Fabfilter plugins. So as you can say I am all setup in the DAW and software synth world. The thing that I have always missed is the "creating the sound" process... That`s not a pleasent experience in the software synth arena. Too much out there and too long lists that you get lost and in the end you just use patches made ny others and you tweak them a bit and resulting in feeling almost that you steal others ideas and creations in your own music. My music style you can say its a blend between Kraftwerk and C418 (Minecraft music creator). So its a kind of Ambient Kraftwerk sound with a bit of heavy synths and basses and kicks here and there (I hope I managed to describe my style a bit). I can link some two tracks of mine here: This two youtube videoes of my music can summen up my style. I live in Norway and here the modular world is not so connected I guess, because I am struggling finding others in this kind of music production and so the informations I get are more on the international side. I am looking in this AE Modular setup mainly for the making of sounds and all I can get out of it and integrate it in to Ableton Live where then I arrange it and continue the composition with my software synths with Battery 4 for drums and all my other synths there. I hope I am in the right place and I hope I made a good presentation of myself fo you all. Looking forward to get to know you all better and be a part of this exciting and wonderful "movement"

Hi fotoelektrik, welcome again ... I love your videos, but there are so few of them ... I hope once you have an AE you feel inspired to make a few more Please go through the Performances here on the Forum where so many talented people have uploaded their AE creations. I'm sure this will give you a good sense of what's possible with the AE. Also please don't hesitate to ask questions (but please read the FAQ first )

I am using now the AE Modular planner to see what I need and what I think can be a good setup for me. But I have to admit that I may need some opinion on what I have build. Is there a way to share the rack I have created? To get some feedback on it?

Hi all, new to AE (starter rack 2 arrived just this morning!), I’m planning on using it as an ecosystem for some modules that I’ve been playing with (small run kits). Originally I was planning on making them eurorack compatible but AE modular is a much better fit.
Anyway, looking forward to playing and experimenting!

I expect that it would fit, yes — the circuit is based on an ATTiny85 (as are most of my modules), so it's really 'just software' The second chip required is an op-amp for signal conditioning…

.. so it's really 'just software' Don't say that! I'm a software developer myself and know how much work goes into 'just software'. You might like the work that one of our forum members, Mathias aka visuellemusik, has put into different firmwares for the GRAINS module. Please check it out here: github.com/aemodular/GRAINS Love to get any comments or ideas of improvements or enhancements on any of these.

Heh, yes I know — it was said with my tongue firmly in my cheek I am also a software developer (my field was real-time embedded stuff, which I was doing less and less of at work, so I started looking into what could be done with a resource-constrained 8 bit processor such as the ATTiny85!). I have a github repo with the code for a 'drone synth' here: github.com/minimism/dr1a (there are two branches, one is arduino based, the other uses make). The repo also contains the circuit diagram. Construction video and demos are on my youtube channel (which you have already seen!): I shall have a look at the link at some point — I have heard of grains, but I don't know anything about it

Hello folks, rather excited to be on the verge of joining the club...
Heard about ae modular back at the Kickstarter and earmarked it as something for the 'one day' list, as a replacement for my long gone tinysizer(s - I had two at different poits), which I liked a lot but always craved full modularity... and I love the single manufacturer/format approach so this is clearly for me!
I've kept an eye out on how the system has developed and have finally got to the position to make the jump - the approach to that sequencer module and percussion bits have pushed me over the edge.
So yeah, hopefully my 2 row starter system with a few bonuses will be here later in the week... can't wait to finally get to pick this system apart; I'm very much looking forward to getting to grips with what Robert has put together...

Hello Mini Modular World, this is me, BbJack, a musician on his journey.. growing up on drums, playing trumpet in my early twenties and switching to keys to not wake up the little kids in the last decade. I got into electronic music some years ago and give it a try with the roland aira series by not only looking into a computer display and clicking the mouse for making music.. Sometimes I am missing something.. no sequencer on this synthesizer, no audio input on this one... missing filter modulation/automatisation and so on and on. So the time for a modular synthesizer has come.. So maybe giving ae modular a try. An affordable rack with arduino and diy capabilities.. sounds good. I would like to have a chance to hear it live and play around with the tiny knobs. An opportunity is the kosmo format, but I am struggeling by searching all the electronics and buying all the stuff I nead to build. Or giving the Volca Modular a try, to get fast into playing, I am not sure about. Next steps, trying to find out which modules i really need to go beyond my desktop synth experiences and how to get them in time Actually, I build an arduino drone box and would love to build a diy case on the AE measurements and bus system to let the mini modular system grow

Next steps, trying to find out which modules i really need to go beyond my desktop synth experiences and how to get them in time. You might want to start with a Starter 2. This has 12 spaces open for expansion, which makes it super-easy to drop a SEQ16 and a few other related toys into the system. We got one as a gift (ONLY with the AE system could you make a statement like that, unless you were some rockstar!!!) for a longtime producer friend, and he immediately cooked up something massively bangin' with it upon arrival. In his case, he's been using it with a ZAQuencer, and the results he's gotten are 100% off the chain! He's even taken it out to gig live with it several times now...which is easy, considering the size.
But start on that scale, then grow. That approach has been working for a number of new AE users...and don't worry about feeling "boxed in" by this being a starter system. You'll be discovering new and strange things that it's capable of for MONTHS after you get it!

Hello AE Modular community,
I am new to modular and don't have much experience with electronics or hardware synths but I started playing around with VCV Rack last year because I was seeing people performing with modular systems on YouTube and became fascinated with it. All of my music making for the past few years has been with a DAW, midi and vst's, and occasionally with an actual guitar and bass. I started to think about getting my own modular system to incorporate into my studio and music. The cost of Eurorack was a bit much (VCV Rack, cost...sounds familiar right?) and although I was aware of AE I did not know enough to make a decision and so I kept my eye on it and tried to learn more about modular.
Last week I received a Starter 2 system. I am very excited to say the least. I've had a lot of fun hooking it up to my DAW and doing tutorials and just enjoying hands on knobs and the pure sounds this thing makes. I also started looking into maybe a Keystep or hardware sequencer for use without the DAW. Of course some new modules will be ordered.
I look forward to being involved and learning and although I don't know much right now I hope to be able to contribute to the forum.
Best to everyone.
Ernie
