Extremophilia
Theme: Challenge of extremes around a vanished centre.
Submission window: Friday 30th August -> Monday 9th September (23:59:59)
Background:
I was listening to Igor Stravisky's l'Histoire du Soldat recently and was struck by the way he hollowed out his orchestration by using the high or low instruments in each family of instruments (violin, double bass, clarinet, bassoon, cornet, trombone, and percussion) without much going on in the middle.
I think this is part of what attracts me to Ryoji Ikeda's work too, with often close to the threshold of hearing high sounds and clicks or subsubsub bass.
Lately, in politics, it appears to be left and right, but it could be dynamics, or perhaps your most expensive and cheapest pieces of gear, midnight and mid-day, sweet and sour, beer and coffee (more about that last pair later) The core thing would be an interplay of opposites where the centre might be contested or avoided.
I read this and realise I am flashing back to setting assignments for music students (haven't done that for a few years!). I promise not to give anyone grades.
The challenge is set, and runs during the submission window set out above, however, please feel free to add entries or leave comments after the initial challenge has ended.
Each entry should contain:
Your entry can be as short/long as you wish, a simple sound or a track, use external fx or synths, do what you can in the time you have - go wild, make the challenge yours!
You are welcome to use previous entries, as inspiration, build on them to form something new, or just use in a different way, you are welcome to submit multiple entries.
If you are posting on social media (youtube, soundcloud) , please tag with #AEChallenge and #AEModular, and include a link back to the challenge thread here on the AE Modular forum.
Everyone is actively encouraged to comment on entries,
provide feedback and ideas... you are welcome to continue commenting/discussing outside of the submission window.
the more we discuss the more we all learn
