Hello everyone, Our last five community albums AEther Waves Vol. 1 - 5 were an incredible success and were so much fun to produce. As in the previous years, we now have many new modules to play with and new artists who have joined our community, so let's do this again! We will be releasing another album - AEther Waves Vol. 6 and we want YOUR music to be on it! Submissions due by midnight UTC, November 25th for a release on December 6th which is the last Bandcamp Friday of the year. Submission Guidelines: - Only new and previously unreleased material is allowed (please don't use that same track anywhere else after the release!)
- All sounds must be from the AE Modular (*), so no other synths or drum machines. Sampling, editing and arranging of AE Modular audio is allowed, of course.
- When using the SAMPLYR module, make sure that sounds are free from any copyright issues and are free to use!
- Maximum length 5 Minutes
- External effects may be used, such as reverb, delay, EQ, compressor, etc.
- State you artist name which will be listed with your track on Bandcamp
- State the track name which will appear on Bandcamp
- Provide an uncompressed .wav file using a file share service, eg. Dropbox, Google Drive or Wetransfer
- If you use WeTransfer or similar then please send the files to the5thvolt (at) gmail (dot) com
- Make sure there is enough "headroom" in your recording so we can master it to fit in with all the other submissions. Best would be a level around -6dB.
- Provide a photo of your AE Modular setup and a short text description of your workflow and patch. Those would be added to your track information on Bandcamp.
Further to the above I would like to list all participating artists on the Meet the Artists Wiki page and for that I also need this additional info if you're not already on it: - A link to your photo or logo
- A short bio or introduction (if you don't know how to write something that will put you in the best light, let me know, I can help you. I'm already your biggest fan!)
- All you social media links, eg. Youtube, Soundcloud, Bandcamp, Website, Facebook, Instagram, Discogs, Tumblr, ...
- One or two links to a video or other embeddable media of your favourite track as a teaser. If you don't have one, we can just embed your AEther Waves track
- Maybe a list of the gear you use in your "studio" including the AE Modular
- Any other notes you would like listed on your page
If you're already on the Wiki, then please have a look at your current artist page and let me know if you want any updates or changes made to it. We will aim for a release on the 6th December (Bandcamp Friday) and will need about a fortnight for mastering of all files and creating the album on Bandcamp. Therefore the deadline is strict!Everyone who sends in a file by that date and adheres to the guidelines above will be on the album! It's a digital album so there is no limit to how many tracks we can have  All proceeds will again go to Musicians Without Borders, a fantastic non profit organisation that is using the power of music to bridge divides, connect communities, and heal the wounds of war. I would like to see a specific compilation with stricter 'rules' i.e. use AE exclusive, as it IMHO would better showcase the possibilities of the Ae format, an Ableton sequenced series of tuned AE samples is not as impressive as an all singing dancing starter rack track. Just my observation, not a fundamentalist rant.

Yeah, I agree, but I am wanting to get back on my saxophone and use an envelop follower to control the AE. After 4 years of nothing but AE Modular, everything inside the case, I'm looking to broaden out.

On one hand, it's a cool challenge to stick with the modules onboard and nothing else, in which case, I'd even frown upon effects in the DAW. Certainly sequencers and keyboards would be forbidden. On the other hand, I am starting to feel like my whole signal path is one instrument and stuff gets fed into and out of my AE system becomes part of the AE system. If I get there, I'm planning to incorporate my bank of NovaDrones and maybe an old fuzz pedal via the I/O. Maybe my constraint will be that the final signal must come out of the mixer module to the recorder but I'm still undecided. 🤓 The definition of what is an AE system is so broad now that I'd pretty much accept anyone's claim to their music being AE music if they strongly feel it is so. If they did their whole track with no AE involved at all, I guess I'd be wondering, "Why bother?". |

I do my sequencing mostly outside AE, either with a Digitakt or with my Ksoloti gills (which I feel is more in the spirit of things, since it is a virtual modular environment). Ideally, I'd like my track to be a demonstration of the power of IMDI. My lack of composition abilities make that goal a little shaky, but it's the goal nonetheless! All sounds will be AE of course (many thanks to feijai's Grains firmwares!) |

No difference from working with other gear: use daw and record hardware and put some effects in the daw, add more layers with same or other hardware etc. So no live session track this year. I tried to modify the track so I could patch everything and just record a live session but I wasn't happy with the result. The one I submitted sounds better in my opinion. But it was definitely a pleasant experience to try to patch everything up and be able to run the track in one live session! Although the result was quite far from the submitted track...

Yeah, AE was meant to fit within a pre-existing setup. The reality is the sequencing option for AE have been very limited for the longest time. I make do with three SEQ16s and a SEQ8, but I would get much better results with an outside sequencer.
In order for an analog sequencer to do what I truly envision, I'd have to have a dozen SEQ128s or something. So and external sequencer plugged into the AE via IMDI would be the way to go for me.
My goal is to compose music for my YouTube channel, not to max out what the AE modular can do. At this point we all know that AE can do whatever we want. For instance even without a ring modulator we can still get plenty of bell sounds from WAVETABLES, ENV or RAINS. So, it's most important to play whatever music or soundscape you want, for what every reason you want, and however you want.
