Hey, so I'm currently waiting for my modular rack to be made and sent to me, but I thought for a start I'd ask how to record. I'm looking to go off grid and record that stuff that I make. I have an Android phone and would love to just hook a cable to that to record... I also have an ipad, but I dunno, I don't wanna buy the dongles that are on offer cos they don't seem like value for money.
Oh, and if anyone has tips on what NOT to do, I would appreciate them. I know from that other post not to patch an output to an output, but other than that, I'm completely in the dark...

Hi doc, great questions! I was in the same boat as you and did a lot of research before figuring out my options for recording. I'm using a Behringer UCA-222 audio interface which is really cheap and that allows me to connect the sound from the AE to either my iPhone (via the Camera Connection Kit - CCK) or to my laptop for recording. You can see it being used in my video below. All my videos are recorded with an iPhone where I connect the USB cable from the UCA-222 via the CCK to the iPhone to record the video together with the sound of the AE. I also sometimes use the Zoom-H1n mobile recorder to record audio when I'm not interested in the video or when I'm out and about. The Zoom can also act as an audio interface if you connect it to an iPhone or iPad or PC via a USB cable. This is the method I used in this video: For most of my tutorial videos I also use a mixer to mix together a condenser microphone and the sound of the AE which then goes via the UCA and CCK into my iPhone. Hope this helps, please let me know if you have any more questions.

As long as your phone has an 3.5mm audio in it should be possible to record audio without any gear. You just need a 3.5mm cable and a 3.5mm headset audio splitter cable and it should work.

Hi, I also recommend getting a Zoom recorder. These things are the Swiss Army Knife of audio. I don't know about Android but with iOS you can't easily connect anything to the TRRS mic input even with the proper adapters. There's something going on with measuring the resistance I believe to make sure it is a microphone. All line level devices I've tried it with didn't work. The absolute cheapest option I found is a camera connection kit plus a super cheap “Sabrent” USB audio interface, but I wouldn't recommend that. The cheapest option I'd actually recommend is the Zoom U-22, but I think it's worth to consider a recorder that will work without a phone or computer; it's just so convenient. I have the H6 and I love it, but it isn't that cheap.
Cheers Gero

I also have a Behringer UCA-222 which is great for iOS recording and I also sometimes use a Zoom U-24 which has DIN MIDI I/O, if you also want to sequence from the iOS device.
Then again though, with iOS 13 finally supporting external USB drives, you could also simply use a handheld recorder (I have a Tascam DR-40) and then, if you need to, plug that SD card into the iOS device and edit on there. I’m really crossing my fingers that Apple will not screw this up.
Another option for more versatile off-the-grid recording, without a tablet, would be a Zoom R-8 multitrack recorder/mixer, which runs on USB power. I have a Zoom R-16 which I like a lot, but I’m not sure if that one will run on USB power.

How do you suggest I do this with Android? I've downloaded two apps and had no success so far. Happy to hear suggestions. This will just be a temporary solution though, the ability to have a recorder that functions as an audio interface is very tempting...

Hey guys, me again. So, I'm back looking at mobile recording, and figured before I bit the bullet and bought the zoom I'd give recording on my phone another shot. I have a trrs to trrs connected to my phone, but I'm not getting the audio down the mic. Something screwy is going on cos I can record my ipad with the cable. I'm using Smart Recorder by SmartMob for Android. Any help would be great. Thanks.

I was happily recording via my Behringer UA222 into my Samsung S10 and then I upgraded to Android 10 and BANG ... no more sound recording! I've contacted support and they weren't very helpful and I also couldn't find any help in online forums. So now I'm back to recording video and sound separately and then having to match in up in post production.

Hey I also wanted to throw in some pretty cheap and easy solutions. This is the first iRig ios audiointerface. You get them pretty cheap, if used and they work good enough. But for me important they are small and light weigthed. And the tascam-ixz. bit more pricey even used, but packs some more features and higher soundquality AND works with android but also is abit bigger and heaviier if u choose to use batterys for phantompower option. both are „plug and play“ and really easy to use. no apps needed (on ios) for both of them. my recording setup is just an old iphone 4 with audiosharee installed. got the phone for 15€ used got 32gb . audioshare is around 10€ i think. plus iRig for 3€ on ebay makes a pretty cheap but useful setup. hope this could help. cheers.

These are good options, but please be aware that they only transport MONO audio because they are made for guitars, which only send a mono signal. But the benefit is that you don't need a special USB adapter for your phone.

Ive been playing with endlesss a lot recently, and hanging out in their discord chat, and if I hear one more recommendation for the iRig I'll scream! ... seriously, though lots of users over there, and they also seems to love iRig I currently use (for endlesss) my iPhone + CCK + whatever usb audio interface I have to hand (ES-8, or Zoom usually), but if I start using iOS more for music making id probably grab an iRig just because it so tidy. only downside, is if you wanted more inputs/outputs ... then you're better to go the CCK route, since you can then use an audio interface with more IO. (also, if you have a newer iPhones without headphone jacks you'll need to use one of the newer models of iRig)

My solution: the TASCAM DR-680 mkii. Portable six-track field recorder. No, not as cheap as other alternatives...but none of them can play back a quad live backing track while simultaneously recording a board feed of the stereo to the amps. It's quite literally a teensy-weensy multitrack that's about the size of a small purse, and works admirably.

I bought the Zoom H2N as also wanted to do stereo field recordings (literally, sheep and birds!). I have recorded a few bits, and my latest song has gone onto Soundcloud via this device. I haven't mentioned here as no AE modular on it, :-(
I've been really pleased with it, definitely geared towards using the built in microphones but is a doddle to use, and transfer of files is really easy too. Lie to keep my computer work to a minimum....
May soon put an AE only track on the forum with it, but just re-acquainting myself with the system after an enforced holiday from it.

Old thread, but us Android fans get kinda screwed on the pro audio front. All we've really got is Caustic for a little DAW, and the iRigs that have the TRRS plugs. One day we'll catch up to iOS, right? :-p

I toiled over this recording question for a while. Ended up opting for a field recorder (Tascam DR-07x). That was a very good decision. I've found myself recording random everyday sounds a lot with it, and sometimes even prefer the artform to video or photography!
Oh, and it will also provide an interface to your iPhone or Android.
I wouldn't fully recommend this recorder if you plan on carrying it around a lot though, it's a little flimsy. Sound quality is steller.

It's quite literally a teensy-weensy multitrack that's about the size of a small purse, and works admirably. I use a TASCAM DR60 mkii which is the four-track version. It's the same recorder I use for my camera because I record audio separate from video.

I've been using a Korg mr1 off and on since it came out way back - it's recorded both of my AE based things direct from the headphone output. They're fantastic sounding things and can be had for very cheap now - can power off USB too with the right cable.
