There is a time in life when man have to determine which new case for more AEM modules he needs. I have 2 rack with the first generetion case and the Master module with power supply on the side. I want to buy another case (1 or 2 rack). So I have a few questions in this delicate matter.
Am I right there are only second generation cases in the store?
If I would bought another second generation case (along with the new one for more modules) to replace my old case would it be possible to connect both cases using case hinge kit or I would need a new Master also with the power socket on the front?
Does anyone have invented some kind of contraption allowing to connect old type cases (with racklink) at free angle simmilar to case hinge kit?

Does anyone have invented some kind of contraption allowing to connect old type cases (with racklink) at free angle simmilar to case hinge kit? Robert was kind enough to supply me with the newer 2row x20 rack with an extra hole to accomodate my ‘old school’ master module side power socket.. I just had to inform him that master version is what i had.. caveat! this is just future proofing the case as the hole on the side is in exactly THE WRONG PLACE to allow the new rack connector brackets to be attached.. so you would perhaps need to buy the newer master before adding a second case.. OR there is also two other possibilities ( annoyingly i didn’t think of them before ordering the new case ) 1) ask robert to put the side power hole on the bottom row .. i don’t think it’s a biggy to have the master there unless you hate the idea. 2) when you ( inevitably:] ) order the additional case you can get it with the side hole and move the master to that case.. ( i CAN do that one ) also NO , yr old 2 row case doesn’t have the screw holes or bus sockets to attach easily to new case designs, not without a lot of DIYing at least.. good job they are so inexpensive..! also at Superbooth there was a 1unit power master ( no midi ) that Robert is keeping quiet about!! it has the socket on the faceplate and will be great for small 12u set ups etc.. I’ve asked him about this but he is strangely mute ( ie: super busy ) at the moment ,, unsurprisingly... but i, for one, am keen on that idea..

Oh oh, this forward-backward-compatibility thing...
A few words from my side: Indeed, the new cases have a side hole prepared by breaking out a round piece for those who have the old MASTER module and want to use it in the new case. The hinge kit should work also here but perhaps not for totally all angles... Let me check and give an update! One guy made this already and we learned that the hinge part has to be a bit smaller to leave space for the power plug from the side. This is standard now, but I will double check it ;-)
Getting this new case working with the distribution of the bus from front to rear (the PCB strip in the new cases) plus the hinge connection was really a fight for each millimeter but finally I won and it is working quite well now, phew!

Robert, could you give us any info on the 1u power module that I totally failed to notice and ask you about at Superbooth ( due to all the other new stuff and ideas being kicked around! ) will it be a production module sometime..? or was it just a thing you made to show off the tiny 12u rack at shows?

So I have the same issue with an old Master module and transitioning to one of the new cases. The hinge that I got will unfortunately cover the top hole so I decided to just drill a hole in the bottom row ... That should be an easy task if you have a 10mm drill bit. I'm just not very good with hardware (I need 3 attempts to get a nail in the wall) but although it looks a bit rough, it does the trick.

Haha! The bright idea to move the Master on the bottom row was to sophisticated for me to come up with So thanx rockysmalls and admin for the enlightment! With the confirmation from robertlanger the new hinge and new cases will cooperate even with old Master modules (at least on most angles) and with the bottom row side hole alternative I'll buy two new cases with hinge and without racklink. Yeah!

Yeah! I would be really interested in how this works for you. I must admit to getting confused with the different versions of the various parts. I have one "original" two-row cade, with an R2 MASTER (side power only) and a new one-row case (as it came out). They are linked via RACKLINK. I am considering a new two-row using the new linkage and was just going to get a second MASTER as I didn't think my R2 was compatible with the hinges. Of course, that leaves me with the possibility of building a second system. Not something I was planning, but it would use up a few of the older versions of things. Anyway... report back on compatibility and I will be watching.

Oh yes and another thing that is massively obvious after the fact...
Make sure that you put any oscillators in the spaces with the cut-outs on the rear. If you want to calibrate them, that is.
As I said, obvious when someone points it out.

Dear Commander spacedog I'll gladly report back to You, but I'm affraid it will take a while as I have to divide my limited funds between two hobbies - vinyl records and synths. I'll probably order the whole set (I'll try to add some modules and new cables) in two/three parts - month after month, so with usual couple weeks waiting time for the delivery the whole operation will not be finished very soon.

At ease, Lieutenant
No hassle. I may be some time myself anyway as I have a few free slots in my current setup that I can fill (including some new oscillators), I am waiting for some of the new items to appear and then I can make a reasonable order - probably like a lot of other people here. I think I will completely fill my three rows with what I want. So far, I haven't found a module that wasn't useul and fun.
Enjoy the records (vinyl), I recently got some of mine out of cyrogenic storage (well, the room is a bit cold) after looking at yours, and I was listening to my original late 70's Neuronium LPs. Still sounding good on my trusty 1980's Rega Planar 3
