PLAY WHAT YOU SEETheme: Create a patch that comes to mind when you look at the attached picture Submission window: Monday 10th June -> Monday 17th June (23:59:59) Background: Sometimes we all struggle to put that first patch lead into our modular, never mind create a full patch and then tweak it mercilessly. Then at other times, something will have triggered that spark of creativity and it all flows out without us even noticing. Attached is a photograph out of the window next to my small studio. OK, it didn't look quite like that, but then if I attached what it really looked like it might not stir you quite as much. Spend a few seconds (or minutes, if you prefer) just looking at the photograph and then start patching... and tweaking. Remember to hit record at the appropriate moment. As always, have fun and let's be (extra) creative out there.
The challenge is set, and runs during the submission window set out above, however, please feel free to add entries or leave comments after the initial challenge has ended. Each entry should contain:- Link to audio or video example (embedded preferred)
- Short (or not so short) patch notes, explaining how you have built on the above theme
Your entry can be as short/long as you wish, a simple sound or a track, use external fx or synths, do what you can in the time you have - go wild, make the challenge yours! You are welcome to use previous entries, as inspiration, build on them to form something new, or just use in a different way, you are welcome to submit multiple entries. If you are posting on social media (youtube, soundcloud) , please tag with #AEChallenge and #AEModular, and include a link back to the challenge thread here on the AE Modular forum. Everyone is actively encouraged to comment on entries, provide feedback and ideas... you are welcome to continue commenting/discussing outside of the submission window. the more we discuss the more we all learn
This is part of the AE patch challenge series - if you would like more information, or have ideas for the challenge, please post on the patch challenge thread. Attachments:

Hey spacedog , is it allowed to use this piece of art in the video? Absolutely. It's my picture and it really is out of my studio window

It's my picture and it really is out of my studio window Thank you... I asked because it's your picture This is my short ambience patch. The bass notes come from the evolver, everything else from the AE modular. Just had not enough envelopes and amps, but maybe next time. Sequence as usual by akai force. When I first looked at the small picture on my phone I thought the trees are burning. So I wanted to do something sad sounding with the cracking noise and some wind.

I could almost feel the heat. That's exactly what I was hoping would happen: interpret what you feel/see/hear when you look at the picture. Perception is a wonderful thing and a how a stimulus affects us is different for all - as you will hear when I upload my entry later this week. I also love what you did with the imaging (and thanks for the credit).

I always was interested in horror (and other) movie atmosphere and sfx but never tried something like that. A modular synth is really perfect for that kind of stuff.

I already had parts of a patch that I incorporated into this larger composition and I made sure to make it dramatic as befitting this amazing red sky.
Just like with the last patch I used the 3VCSWITCH to create a two note sequence by switching between two voltages generated from the 4ATTMIX. The new 2OSC/d now has a wonderful sub oscillator output for pulsewave and that is used as the underlying bassline. The clave like sound comes from the LOPAG and the bass drum is just a very low oscillator going threw a VCA with snappy envelope (I ran out of filters!).
The Nyle band pass filter sounds really beautiful and with an LFO modulating the cutoff frequency just a bit it generates a nice dramatic sweep. This patch uses the new Multimode Divider for generating different clocks ... this module has so many options ... I feel like a new getting started video is due soon!
No delay was used in this patch, but the MULTIFX reverb1 was on 75% wet for atmosphere.

Today, I fired up the AE Modular and just went for it, after a quick tune-up. All parts were improvised, although it took two passes as I couldn't set everything up at once.
The AE Modular part is actually two sounds recorded live at the same time - one is a sequence from the SEQ16 with a well-modulated NYLE FILTER and the other is a Bastl Kastle using the same modulating LFO patched across and the whole thing passed through a modulated SVFILTER. These two parts were passed through some effects and everything was tweaked live and recorded.
Then there are all of the various Mellotron parts, all played live but afterwards Watch out for the part where I was frantically trying to tune the Kastle away from where I had tweaked it... it almost works
It ended up quite long (10 minutes), so feel free to stop at any time, I was just having fun and I imagine that I'll reuse this when I finally stop collecting pieces for my Cathedral Constructions idea.

I was also mesmerised by the DIVIDER doing its binary counting thing. I really must explore the LOPAG more myself, it is sorely neglected in any of my patches.

Wow ... again a very fine tune, spacedog! I love how the different voices meander around each other and the slow meditative atmosphere. I imagine sitting at your studio window and gazing out at that red sky, chin propped up on my fist and contemplating the fate of future Mars missions. Apparently dust storms on Mars can get up to 20km high, rage across the whole globe and get charged with electricity so that they create thunder and lightning strikes. Thanks admin and spacedog for posting your stuff. The two tracks are very good and it was really exciting for me to listen to these. Like I said, this challenge is really the best for me so far because using some specific modules is good but making that kind of ambience sound to pictures or videos is something really new for me.

Thanks, bahm, as you and jumpinjohnathon said it's about allowing people to be creative, which was my aim. I agree it's sometimes awkward to do something specific with a particular module (not least when you don't have it) although that does push us all towards doing something that we might not do.
This challenge, on the other hand, allows for almost any patch/composition no matter how big or small to be relevant. As the challenges remain open my hope is that some others will upload whatever came to mind - there's no hurry.
I also liked the idea of incorporating a supplied sound/ambience, but I know not everyone can handle multi-track or over-dubbing, so that might exclude rather than include people. For this one, I created the AE Modular part completely live, but as I like always to make something more "complete", I did take a second pass using Mellotron samples, which was entirely down to receiving the new Tangerine Dream 16CD+2BR set on Friday and being inspired

Here is my entry for 17th challenge. The overall mood of pending doom is what I've tried to achieve with my music as the picture evokes such associations. All my synths were involved, one take, dawless. I've reached my limit within soundcloud and I didn't like it there tbh so I try to use Tumblr as my new music platform.

Plus I will clear up soundcloud a bit as additional place for excercise/challanges tracks.

All my synths were involved, one take, dawless. Awesome track! I love how there are all these little sounds coming up and fit so nicely in the whole, broody melange! Well done as usual! Tumblr seems like a great alternative to soundcloud, but the only problem I see with it, is that you can't embed posts in other websites like you can with Soundcloud, Youtube and even Instagram. It's just nice to view and listen to content right here inside the forum without having to navigate away. But that's just me ...

Thank You very much admin! No, it's not only You, I have this concern too. I would prefer to have the track embeded in the forum, but not willing to pay for Soundcloud (which I don't like) I've deceided to use my account on Tumblr (which I like) with it's free sound upload (up to 10mb a day). Everything fine, except here my track will be seen as a redirecting link. Maybe I'll look into instagram too, but minding spacedog's advice will not create yet another stage name

This ended up much more aggressive than it started out! I was playing with the white noise and wave folder modules trying to get a good pad to be the main sound for the music for the picture, with the plan of having crashes and bangs, the rhythm lurching as the "fire" spread. even thought about starting off with a little crackle one side of stereo but decided the AE is unashamedly mono (except the MultiFX) so decided no stereo. It was deciding what to put with the drone/pad that lead to the 3VC switch getting involved, and deciding to try and address both patch challenges at once, the pulse was originally more varied via the Step 10 sequencer, but that ended up on the opening sound, controlling the 3VC switch for that quite subtly. I can hear it clearly in the studio but not so obvious on my computer speakers... The white noise drone/ pad got replaced by the opening sound but just plugged into the 3VC switch to see what would happen, and mayhem ensued! Rather liked it so tweaked it all around a bit to make an arrangement. The whole thing is doen live, and all that is tweaked is the volumes on the 4ATTMix modules and the latch or MMT buttons on the 3 VC Switch. This was really interesting to do, took ages mostly as had to start again if was left for a few days, then I had trouble using my new recorder which turned out to be me being thick - I hadn't bought an SD card for it! I know I could of renamed it but rather like ZOO MOO 7!
