As part of my continuing experimentation and general learning experience, I spent some time today working out how to put a soundtrack to a video in Reaper. There may be easier ways of doing this, but I was using the tool that I have to hand and know well.
So, if you follow all of the "steps" in this short (56s) video you will soon be sequencing in the Berlin School style.
Enjoy

I don't like the video very much, but the sound is absolutely awesome. Great.

Enjoy i couldn’t work out whether to dance the bacon position or the ‘floozy’ position.. so it all got confused and I ended up with something like the Beirut School of Sequencing “under fire”!!! never again.....

OK, I promise only to use my new-found video super-power for good from this point onwards... and the bacon suit has gone.
My next task is to see if my phone camera can capture video well enough to show some of the things I'm doing live. It's quite an old phone, so I shall see. If nothing else, I can make my patch challenge entries more exciting with some graphics.

Thumbs up! If your phone cam is not good enough... I use a Webcam from logitech. Image quality is good but not superb. Wasn't too expensive and you can see the picture on the monitor while adjusting. It's hard to doo if the display is on the opposite side.

That was refreshing and personally I liked the footage that was used.
Well done!

I can't work out the sequence ... is it 4x4 the same note and then 4x4 a different note and so on? Or is it actually a chord that is being played as an arpeggio and repeated 4 times? What is the chord progression?
Can this be programmed using the AE Sequencer? Maybe by using 4 oscillators with different "root" pitch and somehow switching between them?

Aha, admin, there is the secret of Berlin School Sequencing... It's really quite simple, but the ear is deceived because of the overlapping delays. I will deconstruct it with some sound samples and then you will hear how a dotted-eighth delay is your friend Absolutely could be done on the AE Modular, in fact I spent a few hours yesterday doing just that to try out a few ideas. I'm happy to upload some of that as well, although it is quite rough around the edges.

Ahh, yes...delay lines are sooooo useful. Things get really fun when you use different beat subdivisions panned hard-left and hard-right with your source in the middle. Spatial hocketing! Do wish we were getting a shift register module, though; Robert discussed that some time back w/ me, he seemed to think it was relatively easy to implement.

Again, this was a first for me (old hat for most, I know). It seemed to work OK and I'm pretending the extra space isn't really there I made this unlisted, so it's just for us here on the forum. I hope that you get something useful from it - it's not rocket science once you see/hear how the sequence developed. All of the intermediate stages are played twice and I did add a quick live piece as background as it seemed a little too stark without something. Have fun

First time I see a tutorial in this detail on Berlin School sequencing. I guess I now have to start tuning my oscillators and sequences to make this work. Thank you so much ... I will start trying to get this done on my AE rig and report back.

spacedog it's brilliant, very informative thank You! Your tutorial should be used to teach kids in schools! Not in Berlin schools only

Awesome spacedog! I'm surprise how "easy" it's made, this kind of step by step tutorial is very helpful for me. I looove your tape delay, well mostly the look of it to be honest but I'm pretty sure it's a quiet good beast

If you want to hear a few more examples of my Berlin School sequencing (including on the AE Modular), and quite a lot of AE Modular "ambience creation", I have collected all of my recent Cathedral pieces into an album on Bandcamp. As a consequence, I've removed all of the original Soundcloud mixes and made a note in the relevant posts on this forum. The album features all seven of the improvisations that I did, all of which were played live although often needing two passes owing to my inability to play the keyboard with my feet. For the album I set up the transitions between pieces and played live improvisations to link them up, scarey, but worth it - just like Tangerine Dream used to do in the 70's. Oh yes, and if you like the Mellotron, you may like the first part. The album is available here for what ever you want to pay for it (for now), and I won't be offended if you take it for free I also wrote a blog piece about it that is linked from the Bandcamp notes. So, I hope that you enjoy it, I enjoyed playing all of the music. It's my way of learning how to incorporate the AE Modular into my setup. Now I'm off to finish this amazing new Tangerine Dream Boxset. I think it may influence my entry to this week's patch challenge.

It's done quite well and hit the dizzy heights of the best-selling Berlin School album on Bandcamp for a short time (currently at #4). I'll be taking it off "pay what you want" soon, so please do grab it now for free if you want it, I don't mind - and thank you to those of you who bought it, it's appreciated. There is quite a bit of AE Modular on there, nearly all of the bridge pieces and background ambiences are from the modular and the odd sequence is as well. Perhaps I should set myself the challenge of a whole album that only uses the AE Modular...?

Would love to see a AE Modular only album! That sounds like something I will try, although it may take me a little longer than normal and I would like to make it a Berlin School album (which makes he challenge a little harder).
I came close recently with an Ambient album that I out out anonymously on Bandcamp where I used a lot of AE Modular snippets and samples (but not exclusively) and put them through my VLEA (Very Large Effects Array) and an adapted Klein Bottle in my DAW.
