Here's the recording: on.soundcloud.com/uFJG9
Now this cover has my Deluge doing the melodic part with a very simple e-piano preset. The melodic stuff is just to give framework for the rhythmic stuff that I have the AE modular doing.
The heart of the patch is the Topograf. I have the Deluge send out a gate at 24 pulses per quarter note, which is the midi standard clock rate. This allows the topograf function at the highest resolution. But there are a few parts where I intentionally modify the 24 ppqn rate (4th and 8th bar of the intro). I also experimented in manually adjusting swing while playing live, but it was a little cumbersome to hit the undo button to get back into straight time.
The kick is the Drumkit010, the Wonkystuff bd55, and the AE Kick layered. The snare is just the Drumkit010. The high hats are the Drumkit010 and the Wonkystuff hh110 layered (with the normal 3 output for the closed high hat and the 3 accent output for open high hat). I also decided to have the accent for output 2 of the topograf go to the Wonkystuff cb808.
As for signal processing, the Drumkit010 is run through a filter (to try to remove the high pitched noise issue that is being revised), through a SignalAmp module, and then split where one copy is mixed directly in and another is run through the micro bit crusher.
The real magic comes from using the joystick module. I have the X CV control the chaos of the Topograf and the Y CV control the pitch of the Drumkit010. I then made the Q4 also control the density of the Topograf's 3rd channel. Finally I made the push toggle a switch that control the passthrough of either the dry Drumkit010 output or the bit crushed signal. Additional performance control is manually engaging the reverse on the Drumkit010.
I know this isn't quite like the original's surgical approach, but it was neat to try to approximate the feel and be able to perform with the system. I do definitely notice that the performative element is crucial as I have had some run throughs where it just didn't get into the groove.
