I listen to lots of cool tracks on Modwiggler. And sometimes think that the fidelity of high end modular is better than AE.
While I could see many people could be seduced by glossy stereo-fied sounding Buchla type modules. I still really dig my AE setup (5 racks now!). The versatility is there. Continuity of the brand is good. Lots of modules from Kyaa and Wonky stuff.
My analogy is that of when I first heard the band The Fall, I thought 'this sounds a bit weak and stringy'. But I soon ended up being a big fan of the band and sound for years to come.
So I say keep the faith, for anyone thinking of going all Behringer or full on Buchla et al.

AE has a decent sound - the 5v point to point doesn't help it in the 'fidelity' stakes but if you can embrace that noise floor all will be well.

A lot of the greatest music from last century was produced on gear many people would scoff at now - the fidelity of tape recorders, and most studio gear until the 1980s was pretty poor compared to what our home studio equipment does now; "it ain't what you use, it the way that you use it" to paraphrase a fun 80s song.
The first thing I do when checking out any new synth is turn off any FX, if you can't get nice/interesting tones without it ain't a good synth, but the manufactureres are fully aware you need killer presets in this day and age....
