Hi,
I’m looking for an Ae Modular system since maybe his Kickstarter begin.. always an eye on news, try to get one, but, never do…
I play music for myself when i can, just love fat drone electronic pieces and exploration for my ears.. and looking for a new synth..and i fell in love of this :
2 Behringer Pro-1 seems in drone mode with reverb of an analog four
Sound very fat !!!
Does the osc and filter Ae Modular system sound so fat ? ?
I admit i’m user of a Behringer 2600, can be very fat, and with distortion it is a very horror porn goodness !
Interesting in new gear with drone experiment with organic fat sound.. And i see drone 38 and dronx seems very interesting, it’s a few like a Lyra 8, but for sure, i think to use drone 38 and dronx is maybe less easy that it can be….
So…. yes what do you thinking ? a Ae Modular system can be forget 2 Behringer Pro-1 ?
What system/module would be a good idea (yes, starter system 2 with extra 2vca, 2env, effects..) but does it really sound ??…….dronx have distortion and delay…with drone 38 seems more fat than osc on system starter…. mmmmmm
A instagramer : Blackmoth was very interesting with his system ae modular, he use various pedals too.. i don’t have see an other demo so interesting with a ae modular system… but bow he use only obly modular gear and no more ae modular… so me asking…..
sorry for that ! Thank you !

Well, the AE Modular can make any sound you want. Our main drone guy doesn't even use the Dronx "system." So, yes with any true modular system it's up to you to develop that fat sound you like. I would get the DRONX and DRONE38 plus the FILTERBANK to really custom shape the exactly the sound you're looking for.
The original AE Modular oscillator is not that great. I would skip it and either stick with the DRONE 38 or get a pair of WAVETABLES oscillators. They have a second oscillator that add a lot of thickness to the sound that you're looking for. Also the saw wave is more of a square saw. It rips! An MS20 filter will give you that croakiness you hear. A WASP filter wouldn't be bad either. So, you really have to decide are you doing to go with the DRONX/38 system or individual oscillators, filters VCAs and such.
Also add the DELAY and MULTIFX modules. Those will add a lot of phatness to the sound. the DELAY with feedback and the MULTIFX in Deep Space mode will add tons of phatness to your sound.
The point is with a true modular system, you build it over time. Start with a base, then build out, adding and deleting modules that work in your system. Again I would skip on the VCO and get either DRONX/38 with a FILTERBANK or something like two WAVETABLE oscillators with MS20 or WASP filters.
Oh, yes, don't forget the PHASER. So, DRONX, DRONE 38, FILTERBANK, PHASER, DELAY, MULTIFX, you'd be looking at some seriously phat sounds!

What funbun said. I started out with a starterrack II with a multi-fx and grains module and that got me fat droneing and sc(r)aping without any issues. It's all about the patching. This is modular after all.

You can get very FAT nasty drone sounds with the Drone38 and DronX. I played an open mic using drone patch I set up and almost jumped in surprise when I plugged in. The guy with the PA asked if he could turn it UP because it sounded so damned full and spacious. If you tune the Drone38 well you can achieve sounds like a distorted, down-tuned guitar (think Sunn O))). Put on some good headphones and search "drone" on the forum and listen so some stuff. And everything funbun said.

Hi Thank you for your answer ! I'll take a closer look on the forum about drone achievement…I don't scratch enough I configured a small system, but I admit that I quickly arrive at the price of a Starter System 2 … (case 16 with, bus cable, power alimentation, various wired / and for it : Power / Dronx / Drone38 / Ms 20 filter / Multifx / Phaser / Wavefolder / 4l/O) And well, i admit too.. maybe it is not a good idea.. I don’t know Ae Modular logic use, and i think maybe begin in upside down with this (understanding to use a complete Ae system in first step for to add other module like drone38, etc..) for a noob. Maybe if i don’t get this 2600, it will be more easy to get a System 2, but love this 2600 attachment with my Analog Four, and so many work to do with… and i’m not a pro with all understanding connection, so many to do.. At this point i just looking a small system drone, for pleasure drone autonomous, between like a Novadrone of Casper Electronics and Lyra-8 of Soma on Ae Modular module, and after if i was happy extend with a Starter System (and sold or keep my 2600..) it’s why i choose some different module..

I like your proposed rack with the filter and wavefolder. As a minimal "requirement" I recommend the combination of DRONX and MULTIFX. In this example I used the Wonkystuff Core1.D with the VCDO Blender firmware. The magic happens when the DRONX effects and the MULTIFX effects work together. I also own the DRONE38. It is also fun to use. In my opinion it is a bit "special". There are no CV inputs for pitch or trigger. So you have to play it manually. Of course you can patch the output to VCAs and modulate the volume. I have mounted my POWER module on the right hand side of my case. When I bought the modules and the case, I had the POWER module on the left hand side. But the output of the MULTIFX is patched into the I/O1 and I/O2 of the POWER module. So I had to use a long cable which got always in the way when I wanted to use the other modules. Now I can use the very short cables as MULTIFX is right next to the POWER module. There is a picture in my post (link above)
