Howdy,
I'm a professor of electrical and computer engineering at Georgia Tech.
Many of you are probably familiar with my "ECE4450: Analog Circuits for Music Synthesis" lectures on YouTube. I taught the first version of this class way back in 2006. Historically the final project has usually involved the students designing a circuit geared toward the MOTM 5U format, but historically the students only have gotten as far as a putting together a PCB in the time available, since front panel construction and wiring is a pain.
This semester I decided that the students shall design and build a module in the Tangible Waves AE format, since it drastically simplifies front panel design and construction issues. I shall encourage them to use designs that are already out there that use +/- 12V or +/- 15V and modify them as needed to operate with the 5V unipolar supply.
I'm putting together a list of "best practices" for the AE format based for my students based on what I'm seeing here, and was wondering:
* Are the rail-to-rail MCP602 and MCP604 pretty much your standard go-to op amps? Like, you use them in all the places other formats use TL072s or TL074s? Are there any other op amps that come in handy in AE format designs?
* Has anyone put together Autodesk Eagle templates for the format, with the power jacks and input/output headers and mounting holes in appropriate spots?

Hi Dr. Lanterman! Whilst I’ve not watched all of your course videos, I am definitely aware of your great lecture series — very nice to see you here As for your questions: * the AE modules that I make as ‘wonkystuff’ use the MCP600x series of op amps from Microchip since they have rail-to-rail output and input, whilst the MCP60x series only have rail-to-rail outputs (but a larger GBWP). * I use easyeda and made a template project some time ago, which could probably be exported to another format — it can be found here: oshwlab.com/WonkyStuff/ae-blank-projectHappy to answer any further questions, as I’m sure will others! john..

Wooow, I wasn't aware to have you in the AE forum, lantertronics - this is awesome!! And your idea to use the AE format for your educational work is super exciting! To answer your questions: As namke already mentioned, my go-to opamamps are MCP6002/6004 too; in the past I had used the 602/604, but the 600x have the mentioned advantages and - for me as a manufacturer of low-cost stuff also important - they are cheaper than the 60x (although the price has been rising in the past, as for almost all semiconductor stuff). For cases where rail-to-rail is not that important (pure audio signals) I also use the LMV324 / LMV358. I'm working with KiCAD for PCBs; I'm not sure if a conversion to Eagle is possible but I can imagine some converter is out there. Of course I can provide more information and support, just let me know! The mechanical stuff is made with CorelDraw, but I can export as DXF, SVG, AI... whatever you need. Best you contact me directly via tangiblewaves@gmail.com We regard AE modular as very useful for educational purposes, e.g. because it plays along with Arduino stuff out of the box, and the costs are lower. I'm really curious to see what you will do with your students! Greets, Robert

This course is exciting, and I have seen some of your videos on YouTube!
Will you be posting this latest version of your course to YouTube also? I'd love to follow along and "audit" the course in some way. Its been a long time since I got my EE degrees, and could definitely use an analog refresher before working on some of my own DIY ideas!

Wow! This totally has to be in the next newsletter. Love to see what your class comes up with.
I know a crane engineer who went to Georgia Tech.

It's pretty much the same. I'm running the class in a "flipped" format -- I'm having them watch the videos I made in 2021 on their own, and then the class time is more for demos and class discussion. I'm going to give some soldering lessons and have them practice soldering, talk about PCB design, that sort of stuff. I've brought in a big Synthesis Technologies MOTM system (Paul Schreiber's designs) and a Korg MS-20 and Moog Werkstatt and some other odds and ends for the students to play with.
