I’ve been wondering if anybody has experience with simple audio reactive lighting products. Really just audio volume controlling the luminance of RGB lights. There are of course lots of video synths out there and special synth-related lighting products, like MIDI-controlled DMX boxes, the Doepfer A-197-3 LED Controller or Trogotronic’s i1 CV/audio illuminator. And there are plenty of DIY Arduino LED circuits online too, but let’s disregard DIY for now. When you look for audio-reactive lights online, you find looooots of cheap products, that all have one thing in common though: no line input socket, only a crappy mic. I only make music with headphones and thus I want a proper audio input, ideally with an attenuator/sensitivity knob. Looking a bit deeper, I found the Nanoleaf Rhythm Light Panels Starter Kit. This comes with a line-in socket and smartphone control. They’re discontinued, but still easy to get and apparently supported “forever”. Seems quite elaborate though, for my simple requirements. I’m a little surprised that I can only find rather expensive and complex solutions, so maybe I’m looking in the wrong places? I mean, the Doepfer A-197-3 would be exactly what I want, but two of those are 160 bucks already and then you need the Eurorack case, etc.

If you find a solution can you let us all know. I just went down the cheap set of lights from Amazon route, which is actually pretty good unless, like yourself, you are using headphones!

Hm, okay … thinking about this some more, I guess I could easily desolder the onboard mic of these things and add a 3.5mm socket instead. Might require a lot of attenuation and it’s DIY of course, but that would be suuuuper cheap.

Okay, so I went ahead and totally reduced my search query complexity from something like “audio-reactive aux input LED strip” to just “music LED” 😅
… and I found this BTF-Lighting CSY07, that has an AUX input, as well as a bluetooth audio input:
It’s less than 20 bucks and just requires a standard RGB LED strip. So all in all less than 40 bucks! I’ll try this out and will report back.
EDIT: Okay, it was even just 29€ including a 1m LED strip (60 LEDs/m), which is long enough for my little 80cm wide synth-wardrobe.
EDIT 2: It was DOA and I‘m not sure if I should order it again.

This thread is a good possibility to share my idea of a DMX module for AE; a short while ago I made a project completely unrelated to AE, where I developed a DMX sender. So I have the foundation, and my idea is to be able to map a number of CV's to DMX channels, of course with individual scaling, presets etc. There is a lot of really low-cost lighting equipent with DMX available e.g. on aliexpress, which sparked my interest already some months ago.
So any ideas and wishes are welcome!

It arrived broken. Oh well. It‘s very cheap and flimsy of course and I don‘t think I‘ll order it again.

Ah yes, I remember the thread. Thank you. I was hoping to find an off-the-shelf solution though. No time for DIY This thread is a good possibility to share my idea of a DMX module for AE; a short while ago I made a project completely unrelated to AE, where I developed a DMX sender. I‘ve never used DMX, but I’ve seen those affordable lights. Such a module would be really cool and I think that it wouldn‘t need to be very complex regarding its features. CV control over luminance and color might be enough already
