admin shared a link to a video about the Starter Rack 2 where he mentioned an interesting topic in the comment of this video about the order for patching oscillators into the filter or the amplifier first: I found this interesting because when I started with my AE modular system I didn't know what the right way is. Somehow my approach was OSC->VCA->VCF. Carsten also mentioned in the comment " It's modular so there's no right or wrong way". That is right, but I would like to know what your preferred order is and what the differences/advantages/disadvantages are for choosing one or the other option.

I have no preferred order but there is definitely a sound difference.

same, no stance on what should be, I mostly go the OSC VCA VCF as I like how the filter works as the amplification changes rather than the VCA changing the volume of the filter output.

I've always plugged the vco/osc straight into a vca. Any efx would come afterwards.

Being the old, po faced synthesiser guy who has come to modular late in my "career" it hadn't even occured to me to to the VCA before the filter! I will be giving it a go very soon.....

My Siel DK-70, being paraphonic has the oscillators, then the VCA, then the filter.
However, if you set the VCF to resonate, being downstream from the VCA, it will sound regardless.
Generally, synths are oscillators, VCF, then VCA.

As a starter rack 1 user.... I gotta say, OSC-VCF is my preffered combo :-)

This decision was also mentioned in the Patch & Tweak book. They write that this mostly makes a difference when there's distortion because the signal is at a high level, going into the VCF, where it might be clipped.
Then, if you go VCF -> VCA, you get a constant level of clip/distortion. But with VCA -> VCF, the distortion would be added depending on the envelope.

I have actually never thought of doing OSC=>VCA=>VCF since nearly all synths have the VCF before the VCA (or at least it looks like that on the front panel)

All my synths have the VCF-> VCA, so i just copied that mindlessly. Interesting note on the clipping however. I can imagine some of the VCO's (Looking at you, saw/square) are load enough in volume to add distortion in any module that follows. I also noticed (with the Sine wave from 555 it's very noticeable) that my 4-4MIX module adds distortion as soon as you dial in the knobs above pretty much halfway, when feeding a VCO straight into the mixer
