Hi, So I'm wondering if anyone in the community has much experience running outboard instruments through their AE synths. I have a collection of hardware synths so I'm not very interested in using modular for sound generation. Instead I was fascinated by the idea of using modular to build a mixer with built in filtering, effects, and modulation. I've read the module wiki and it looks like it's possible with the 4i/o module and any number of the mixer options. My main concern is whether or not there's any noticable drop in signal quality running complex sounds through the audio signal path (i.e. hi/lo frequency loss or lots of noise in the vca's etc). I'm not expecting a hifi mixer in the end but my goal was to build something akin to a volca mix with better I/O

I do this all the time, the outputs of my blackbox go into my AE modular using the 4 I/O module.

I don't do it too much or notice much drop, if I do I run it through the 2SignalAmp or Boost to bring it back up but really only use it to boost already low quality sounds. The new Filterbank would be something you'd want to include as well I think.
ps, I like your name too

Instead I was fascinated by the idea of using modular to build a mixer with built in filtering, effects, and modulation. I've read the module wiki and it looks like it's possible with the 4i/o module and any number of the mixer options. My main concern is whether or not there's any noticable drop in signal quality running complex sounds through the audio signal path (i.e. hi/lo frequency loss or lots of noise in the vca's etc). I'm not expecting a hifi mixer in the end but my goal was to build something akin to a volca mix with better I/O The AE modular mixer/fx idea is a cool one, and would work well with mono sources as otherwise you would need 2 of each filter, modulation etc. Stereo out is easy with one of the mixer modules, (or the MultiFX). Some AE modules could be considered noisy; that is often a by product of the circuit and normal for that type, e.g. the Phaser, Spring Reverb. I would highly recomend having 2 lo-fi delays for stereo use if nothing else - one of my most used modules! Overall You will not get the sound quality of using a purpose built mixer like a Soundcraft, A&H etc. but certainly good enough to use for music you intend to release on-line, or live - look at the Aetherwaves albums and the Music/performance section of this forum
The 4 I/O is a must, the power & master modules also give you 2 I/O you could use for audio. The key point for these is that voltages are kept between 0&5V for the AE regardless of what is send by the external gear, very few synths have audio that is in that range... If connecting Volcas the VM Bridge module should be considered. Another module to consider is the Stomp I/O, I have used it to input a synth but normally has a distortion pedal on it....
I have never done an A/B comparison with a synth going thru'/bypassing the AE but I have not noticed any real issues with the sound - I may have raised a filter cut off to make the sound brighter into the AE or something, probably due to the lo-fi delay! Noise is a consideration, especially if you use the Headphone module as a stereo out, but this can usually kept at least managable; having said that I have started to use a noise gate sometimes when recording due to some of the noiser modules - I do love the AE phaser

Hey, I love using the AE as my FX-Station. Feeding my Tr-08 and Micro-Freak as well as my voice through the Modular. Check out "Wellen unserer Zeit" and "Distorted Growth" for a example. As long as some little noises that might get through the system doesn't bother you, the AE is a great and powerful system.
