So I went to a music festival yesterday with wife and offspring. I did not know any of the bands playing since the festival took play in Danmark and most of the bands were actually danish. Anyhow, long story short I all of a sudden realized with great clarity how boomers and their holy 'taste' in music are nothing but an expression of nostalgia and are in no way a truthful response to actual quality.
Now in all fairness music is not a competition but you can not go around and hate on 'all those kids and their new music that isn't even real music but only made by computers and blahblahblah' when your favorite band are a bunch of old guys who were probably the shit in the eighties but who forgot to keep up with the music scene and who purely rely on rehashing their old hits in a way that can only be described as pure routine.
It only made me wonder when was the last time these 'real musicians' ever practiced for real and kept their technical skills on point. Because the bass and guitar 'solos' that got demonstrated were perhaps mind blowing in the 1981 but oh my, they don't hack it in 2022, live with it.
What I saw were young bands play with fire in their hearts and a hunger, who simply obliterated the 'dinosaurs' who stopped evolving 20+ years ago and now are stuck in the tar pool of crappy halfarsed pentatonic whammybar 'solos' an 'everybody clap your hands' stage shows. And don't even get me started on the 'singers'.
But hey this is just the rant of an old man who got massively disappointed by what could have been teenage heroes, and who got blown away by them kids.

tar pool of crappy halfarsed pentatonic whammybar 'solos' what has always annoyed me about big tv or sporting events is that they keep 'wheeling out' those old 80's bands to perform instead of getting the new up and coming kids that, as you say play with fire and hunger and would blow the crowd away.

I'm not Danish but I was dragged to Smukfest in Skanderborg on Sunday and got to see Kesi, Queen Machine, TV2, and Scarlet Pleasure and a few other bands whose names I can't recall.

I think the reason they always "wheel out" the same, old artists (like Superbowl 1/2 time too) is what is likely to be at least liked by the most number of people, or to put another way, lowest common denominator for being at least ok/inoffensive. There is also the question of the artist's image/reputation and how the organisation percieves it may be controversial for them (in these risk-averse times) so they go with the safe option. Another consideration is a less famous artist may be seen as being promoted by being at said event, so they could even have to pay to be there - that certainly used to happen for "up & coming" bands to pay for support slots on tours etc. I remember there was a bit of fuss about the line up for Live Aid in 1984 (yes, I am that old) as some bands were perceived as using it to give a leg up for their career rather than actually supporting the cause....
Not saying I agree this is all fine/agree with etc. but just the way it is.....

Funny you mention those phoneheads, they were most present during the boomer band shows. It seems like boomers are far more into filming whole concerts on their crappy phones instead of actually enjoying the moment, the band you're filming are standing there less than 10 meter away from you yet you will watch their performance on the little shitty screen of your mobile phone. I always wonder whether they re-watch those videos once they come home. Weirdos.
