Quick question here on the new VMIX10 unit...
My biggest issue around using this with my current portable setup — which this would work great for — is probably that there are too many mono inputs on the VMIX10 and only 2 stereo channel inputs. Pretty much almost every device stream I’m using already has stereo effects at the very least, which means that at best the 6 mono channels would have to collapse to 3 dual-mono (with the disadvantage of having to deal with manipulating/balancing two level controls for each “input”).
So my question is this: is the gain staging set up on the 2 stereo effects returns such that they could be used as additional input channels? That way, I could use it as a 4-channel stereo mixer and then maybe get some additional value out of the extra six channels.
TIA!!

I don't own one but I would be very surprised if you couldn't use the 2 FX returns as inputs for other stereo signals - it normal on most mixers and a common thing to do. I have assumsed as much when I wrote the Wiki page on the related module!

I have assumsed as much when I wrote the Wiki page on the related module! Cool. That’s pretty much what I was figuring, but good to know that someone else came to the same conclusion. Thank you. Hrm, after considering it for a bit, a couple of other questions also came to mind. For instance, it’s likely not the case, but I’m wondering if the FX sends have enough gain to drive a set of headphones (at all). Because while I’m not interested in actually using it/them for effects, I sure as heck could use a cue mix to listen and tweak a channel before bringing it into the main mix. Relatedly, was it ever resolved whether the FX sends are pre-fader or post-fader? I recall there was some discussion on this around the AE Module version of this, but don’t remember the outcome. Thanks again!!

Thanks again!! The FX sends are post fader. They are line level not amplified, but could of course be fed into a headphone amp.... I use a Behringer 4 way headphone amp for this purpose among others. There is the AE headphone amp module....

The FX sends are post fader. Ah, drat. Well, that kills that idea, since using a cue mix to set things up would require a pre-fader feed. I did finally find that thread on pre/post-fader sends for the Mixconsole. Robert had mentioned there the possibility of putting in internal jumpers or switches so that you might choose. Was there ever any follow-up about which you’re aware? They are line level not amplified, but could of course be fed into a headphone amp.... I use a Behringer 4 way headphone amp for this purpose among others. There is the AE headphone amp module.... That’s actually what I was considering, FWIW, if the levels weren’t hot enough. 😉 Although a couple of my Moffenzeef devices, my Stargazer and MSG, are “line” level but actually hot enough to run headphones too. And I actually have the AE Headphone amp module already part of my larger AE Modular system. But I’d be using this with my smaller noise boxes instead. But it’s all kind of a moot point as the sends would need to be pre-fader to have this work regardless.

Nope, I wouldn't expect the change anytime soon as I would expect the current modules need to sell through before Robert makes more/does any redesign etc. This is my assumption, no inside knowledge!

That is indeed a shame. I would also have hoped to be able to configure the fx sends to be pre fader. I will have to look for an other mixing solution.

Yay! Just received notification from Robert, et al that my pre-order just shipped. Looking forward to seeing what applications this works well for. 😃

Yay! Just received notification from Robert, et al that my pre-order just shipped. Looking forward to seeing what applications this works well for. 😃 VMIX10 Received today! Got home from work tonight and I was able to unbox it (although that's really all so far). Hopefully I can get some time later this week to properly put it through its paces. Initial impressions are: well built, feels solid. Knobs take some small effort to turn and the posts have no wobble, which gives the impression that it's put together tightly. It's nicely compact overall; around the size of your typical Volca. The spacing on the knobs is a bit tight, especially for somebody with hands as large as mine. But not impossible, by any means. I guess if there were anything to criticize from a purely physical perspective, it would be that the knobs themselves have a quite smooth finish. They do look nice, but if anything were to cause functional issues it would merely be that there is no good surface to grip your fingers onto when turning the knobs. This makes precision adjustment a little dicey, but maybe that will improve somewhat as the unit loosens up a bit. Were it not for that, though, I don't believe the small size and tight spacing would be worth considering further. Like I said, physically it's very nice, and I can hardly wait to get it all hooked up. So I'll see if I can get some time with it over the next few days and post back on its actual sound and utility.
