Found some spare time today to do a quick & very lofi demo of the Five Steps.
Audio from the rack is a bit too low, sorry for that. But you should get the point of what makes this module fun!

Thanks for the demo. looking forward to experimenting with it.

I got this and I am still thinking about how to get the most out of it. I am currently most intrigued with what it can do to audio (seems cool and unique) and less into the cv aspect but I am still thinking. Looking forward to installing them (got 2) though it won’t fit into my immediate 2-tier. I am planning to use them in my big 4-tier.

It's not made to be the easiest or simplest sequencer that is plug & play, i hope it can suprise people 😃 Indeed it's interesting on audio. It's effectively a kind of 'bit reducer'. Depending on how much knobs you dial in, and on how high the input's volume is, you'll get more of less 'bits'. Max is 5 (the five Steps..) and 2 bits returns basically as pulse wave.

Still trying to figure out whether I should add this module to my rack.
Do the trigger outputs all get high for the steps that are below the current input voltage, or is it only the last step that triggers?

Still trying to figure out whether I should add this module to my rack. Do the trigger outputs all get high for the steps that are below the current input voltage, or is it only the last step that triggers? So there are trigger outputs and gate outputs. You also need to now that the module internally has four fixed thresholds: 0.833V, 1.66V, 2.5V and 3.33V. - The trigger output is a single output, much like the Quantizer's triggers: each time a note gets changed (= your input voltage crosses one of the four thresholds), a short trigger pulse gets sent out. Handy for triggering your envelopes on note change. - There are four gate outputs, one for each threshold. They are 0V when the input voltage is below their threshold. They are 5V when the input voltage is above their threshold. So as an example for the gates: when you would input 0.5V, all four of them are 0. The input voltage is above none of the thresholds. when you would input 2V, the four gates will be, in order: 5V, 5V, 0V and 0V. Because the first two thresholds are past but the last two aren't. Some ideas what you can do with this gate: you can use the raw output to toggle CV switches, or to open up a filter or not, or to input into The Great Divide and get different attenuated outputs. Or send it to the S&H so you'll effectively just 'let another CV through' while the gate is 5V, but stop at the last voltage once the gate goes low. More fun idea: send it through the Logic module and get even more combinations. Send these combinations to different parameters, switches, Great Divide, etc etc

I should probably really do a comprehensive video going over the inputs, outputs and some example patches.. But right now I'm having too much fun cooking up a Pi Pico to AE adapter circuit (more on the diy forum soon..)

I think the bit reduction aspect is a really exciting aspect and I can’t wait to mutilate all manner of things. I admit the “arp” aspect is less exciting for me right now but I welcome learning about all the cv aspects.

Hello Kurt, congrats on your nice module. Is there any plan of producing more of the five steps module? On your tindie shop it's sadly out of stock ☹️ I found myself in need of a quantizer with the option of creating a custom pentatonic or "tetratonic" 😂 scale, and it seems your module can do that.

If you want to make custom scales, you may want to wait for the Ornament and Crime module currently under development for AE.

Hey yoreb ! Yes, I plan to make more in the future, but it might take a few months. The first version needs a revision because I had a lot of boards that failed me in the testing stage (only about 60% of the boards worked right of the bat). I suspect the PCB routing to be the culprit, but as of yet I have not found the real reason why so many boards didnt work.. So this might take some time to find & solve sadly. Custom scales are def one of the big strengths of this module! But be aware that it is an all analog module, so no presets or saving of scales (for that the Ornament and Crime that funbun mentioned is better).

No presets and various limitations is the reason I jumped to modular, so no worries there! Pity, let us know whenever you are dropping a new batch

Any news on a possible new batch? Five Steps still needs a decent rework, it's harder than expected.. This will be something for the summer, when I have more time. It's still high on the priority list though!
