Many people my age got into music because of the great new sounds that more affordable synths and new forms of bands brought to Pop music in the late 70s/80s. The Synth Britannia documentary series covers this pretty darn well. This is part 1 on Youtube, I believe there are 10 programs in total. This is a playlist featuring some of the bands mentioned, happy memories of seeing some of these live before they were famous, and 1 or 2 after.... www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLQT3uP3-DJnF89_XNrFTslTjf2jZUVQsZ

Can recommend this. Brought back a lot of memories and made me realise I enjoyed quite a lot of the Brit synth pop back in 19somethingsomething......

I quite like this guy. I thought this was pretty good for being so short, there are so many bands/duos that could be mentioned.... Mind you a lot didn't get famous, or even didn't want to be popular so not relevant to the plot here. Numan was who really got me into music Are Friends Electric is still one of my all time favourites.

No fad gadget for example. :-( I think he ended up having a very successful production career from what I remember; he had one minor hit in the UK which set up a lot of people for being producers in those days....

I first listened to electronic music with Kraftwerk's Computer Music album which my Grandma bought for me at the local Supermarket. Strangely it was on promotion right at the checkout next to cigarettes and bubble gum.
Then I listened mostly to classical music until someone introduced me to Depeche Mode "Masters and Servants". I got instantly hooked and that's how my interest in electronic music really started and I then soon discovered Tangerine Dream, Jean Michel Jarre, etc.
While I would say that Tangerine Dream provides the "soundtrack of my life" I owe my love for electronica to Depeche Mode!

For me it was definitely FRONT242 and Fad Gadget that planted the seeds for the love of electronics. I only heard of Tangerine Dream much, much later. I immediately disliked Jean Michel Jarre the first time I heard Oxygène, and he still triggers a major dislike due to his silly megalomaniac antics.

ah glad you mentioned Front 242! forgot I liked them and this reminds me of getting into carpenter brut, skinny puppy, front line assembly etc
Then I moved onto Igorrr who is on another level.
I found out about Jean M Jarre 2 days ago, apparently he is well known in electronica.......

Ah, Front 242 is amazing, my father was heavily into post-punk, and as a kid I listened to a lot of his records. He wasn't really into new wave tho, so no Depeche Mode ('too soft' haha!). But New Order, Front 242, the cure, Fischer Z, the Stranglers,... Quite some synth-y and pop-y stuff in there as well! As long as it had a darker edge.
Funny you mention Igorrr, I did not know anything about them until a friend sent me 'Very Noise' of them 2-3 weeks ago. Which is now officially my favorite clip of the last year(s). Didn't know they are popular/famous/cult/idk?
Also reminds me that i heard this FANTASTIC EBM-y track in a club two months ago:
I was blown away and shazamed it, and was very suprised to discover it was a NEW track, and not 40 years old. And then yesterday I discovered that Flood is kind of a legend!

While I would say that Tangerine Dream provides the "soundtrack of my life" I owe my love for electronica to Depeche Mode! Exactly the same for me, but it's Gary Numan, not Depeche. TD have been instrumental (no pun intended) in my life, 2nd ever live gig (in 1981), most gigs I've been to, (around 15), most CDs by any band by miles (over 200) and saviours of many a boring journey....

Didn't know they are popular/famous/cult/idk? very noise is craaaaazy weird!! love it too. I stumbled upon them a little while ago while searching google for computer/synthy punky sort of bands, heard nothing of them too. Amazing how much top quality music is out there that haven't been heard by some but are staples of others.

Indeed very surprising to hear that this is recent stuff. Nice.
