A little while back Robert mentioned an excellent little eurorack fanzine called Black Panels Only which I've read a few issues of and throughly enjoyed! It inspired me to plan an aesthetic for the new rack I had on order First of all, i knew i would have a fair number of blank panels in the rack - probably not for long, but still - and the TW blanks are black on the rear... so i flipped 'em all over! Kind of has a nice matt effect as well.
Inspired, I took a look at all the modules available atm. Most of them unfortunately aren't symmetrical (some are frustratingly close...) but a handfulareflippable!! 4BUFFER is one of those, and i'd just picked one up, so I took off the front panel, reversed it and made my own slighly abstract design with gold / silver gel pens on the rear. Then I got a cheap ink stamp kit and some brilliant white ink and stamped up the controls (with the smallest stamp i could find, but it's still a bit big - luckily the 4BUFFER is pretty simple)
Around this time namke announced the black/gold BioT so *obviously* i had to get one of those in too.
The VM-BRIDGE has only just arrived, so I want to put it through its paces before defacing it, but i'm pretty sure i can flip that one too, as long as the extra-thick panel around the jacks doesn't cause problems.
(I also got some little hex nuts for the 3.5mm jacks on things like this and the 4I/O, MASTER module etc. Just makes everything that bit more shiny!)
Altogether I think it looks pretty nice, especially in the bamboo case! The violet patch cables (not pictured) go pretty well with it too.
I'm trying to think of some non-destructive ways to 'black panel-ize' the modules which can't be flipped, maybe a thin sheet of black acetate which could be cut to fit and screwed on top of the front panel?

A while ago there was a thread about redesigning our front panels. I wonder if the panel vector files for the laser cutter could be open-sourced. Then we could produce laser-cut stickers/paper/acrylic/metal/wood panels easily ourselves. There are also a lot of translucent gel filter colors what might give the rack a certain color, while still showing the original print on the front panels through.
I made these prototypes a short while ago but left them untouched because of all the superbooth preparation work etc.
These frontpanels will be available in maybe 6-8 weeks; I hope you like them!
they look fab! are they of a less “warpable” material than the old ones? i would love to replace some of the more ‘bowed’ panels with nice flat panels.

ampersands like where you are going with this, makes your setup your own with a cool diy feel.
NightMachines I'm jumping on that translucent gel filter idea. Could fit in well with led lights too.
Just a thought for the clueless.... Obviously you wouldn't use solder or pour acid over your front panel while plugged in but is there anything you really shouldn't use that could rot, seep or impact the panel material permanently or pretty much all usual pens/paints/stamps etc are sweet.

Just to mention one thing, I experimented on one blank filling in the rear with permanent marker to make it 'extra-black' and it never really seemed to dry 100%
I might try some kind of clear varnish over the top of my 4BUFFER depending on how the silver gel pen holds up over time. Ink stamps seem to work great though.
Does all the modules will be in black in futur….??
thx
I think it's planned to offer the black panels as a variation. So you will be able to order the normal grey version or the black version. There will also be individual panels so you could upgrade your existing modules if you wanted to.

this will be great , i have a few that need it , especially that Quantizer module .. that thin strip at the side warps easily from just a vague temperature change!
Not quite sure how one orders a black-panel version of a module though - i assumed there would be an colour option on the module store page - maybe just mention it in a comment when ordering?

Thanks for mentioning this. I think Robert and team haven't added the colour option to every module yet. I'll let them know!
