Hello all, I have a 4 row system and I'm a little unsatisfied with the hinge system to join the two cases together. The top case doesn't tend to stay in the upright position, and in order to get it to stay put at all I have to screw the screws on the hinge so tight that the nut inside the case pops out.
I'm almost at a point where I'm considering just getting another power module and separating the cases. Has anyone made a custom case hinge system that works better?

Oh, that doesn't sound good... When did you order the hinge kit? Indeed, creating enough grip between the hinge parts and the case is the challenge here; in the latest version I use a rubber coating of the hinge parts that brings enough friction to keep things in place. Do you have this one? Or maybe an earlier version? Thanks for bringing this up here; I'm curious to hear about other experiences! In any case, please contact me directly to fix / replace stuff! Sorry for the issues!

My hinges don't seem to hold the second rack in the upright position neither. I had to resort to placing a laptop stand behind it to keep it up right. The hinges have indeed some kind of rubbery coating but that does not give enough friction to keep a fully loaded 2X16 rack upright, in fact the coating started to wear of pretty quickly. The racks itself have these M3? nuts on the side to add a pair of extra screws which could help make a very stable set of hinges that would keep the upright rack under a fixed angle, without any need for special coating on the hinges to add friction.

I'm almost at a point where I'm considering just getting another power module and separating the cases. If it comes to this, you don't need another power module to do this, just a longer connecting cable.

My hinge also doesn't hold well. I do have the rubberized version, but the rubber coating wore off very quickly. I'm considering designing my own case, but until then I've ordered a monstacase, as no hinges means no problems. 🤣

Obviously that would be a better solution, since the bus controls would still pass to the second rack.

There are some approaches I've tried here: forum.aemodular.com/thread/576/case-hax-longer-ae-joinersMy search for the perfect case design continues. As chronicled therein, I use this set-up for busking, so I have needed to rethink a lot of stuff because of the extra strain caused by my moshing around with my AE on a guitar strap. I have found the rubber on the AE hinges to be a bit soft to hold the case tightly. I added the aluminium stays for certainty, but earlier in the linked thread, I used fishing wire with loops cut to size and little hex bolts to go in those little captive threaded inserts. That looked nicer on the desk but not rigid enough for mobile cavorting. I am in the process of replacing the acrylic end pieces with wooden ones to get a bit more strength (and flex). It has been a long wait for the laser cutter to become available again after lockdowns ...

I cannot use the hinges as shown in rodney 's setup since the link cable that was provided in my hinge kit is too short. Did that cable come standard with the hinges hinges?

Rodneys cable looks lige a DIY solution.
It is not difficult to make your own.

Here's a reasonable instruction video. It's very easy.
you need 10 conductor ribbon cable (you can get some wider ribbon and just tear off a 10-strand strip) and two 2mm Pitch 2x5 Pin 10-Pin IDC FC Female Header Flat Cable Connector.
