What are people using to get a clock signal? Does AE have an internal clock source? Not sure which module. Thanks.

I usually just use the pulse or square output of an LFO, but of course you can also plug any MIDI device that generates a clock into the MASTER I/O module and subdivide it with the BEAT DIVIDER module, which is specfically made for dividing MIDI clock pulses (as far as I understand).

"which is specfically made for dividing MIDI clock pulses (as far as I understand)." -> exactly; BEATDIVIDER usually takes the MIDI clock (1/96ths) and divides them to usual clocks like 1/4, 1/8.... plus dotted/triplets on second output. And if you don't use MIDI, an LFO is the fundamental clock source. Perhaps I make a dedicated clock module with excact BPM setting, tapping etc., but no detailed plans yet.

Thanks for your answers. I'm new to modular so using the square wave for a pulse was so simple but not even on my radar. I am using a Beatstep Pro or the Keystep but doing it straight from an lfo is great. I am transitioning from midi mind to cv. Whew!

Fugubot, this might seem obvious, but if you're new to modular some perfect lessons are VCV tutorials on youtube. Check Omri Cohen, modular curiosity, VCV ideas. They explain what are the modules so you can apply what they teach to another modular system. Also it is quite easy to have a visual representation of your signals with scope or vizualisers, so every you do can be more comprehensive.

Thanks. Yup, I've been watching those videos and have vcv rack installed and running.

I connect one of my Korg SQ-1 gate out to I/O 4 to get a 16th beat. But yeah, a BeatDivider is the best solution.

The best clock source... and I swear by it for everything is... The E-RM Multiclock although maybe not the first thing you would buy as it’s fairly expensive. I basically control everything that needs a clock source from it if I want things in time.

I basically control everything that needs a clock source from it if I want things in time. Very interesting, and looks like a good tip - but it is pricey (£434 at Juno, for example), as you said. I spotted the following in the description: Analog clock signals are configurable in polarity, start/reset behaviour and feature a flexible clock divider. An analog LFO is available with various waveforms and a range of 0-5V.So, yes, really interesting, I'm just not sure that my personal setup justifies the expense (yet ). Thanks for the pointer.

Hey,
Was going to try to record my first patch for the rhythm channel but no way to get the midi clock going. I use the Disaster Area Tap tempo. I tried on channel 1 or Off. It only sends clock and works perfectly fine with everything else I plugged it in. Tried with and without Midi splitter (midi solutions quad thru). No led on the master module showing that something is happening...
Anything I should check?

Welcome Yes, you can simply patch the Volca’s analog clock output into one of the AE Modular’s 3.5mm CTRL input sockets of the MASTER I/O module and then spread the clock throughout your modular system from there, using the normal AE Modular patch leads.

Cool. I was hoping it would be a simple solution.

I'm taking the clock from the ctrl1 of the i/o module is this right?

If I remember correctly from owning a Volca myself a while ago, you can set the sync division factor of the Volca’s analog clock somehow. Please check the manual. In the AE Modular you can then use the MM-DIVIDER module to subdivide the clock to make it slower.

My clocking plan is to use one of THESE: www.ehx.com/products/clockworks Notice the ability of this to function as a master clock, with four "lanes" of division that also have a level control for each ones' pulse output. This is pretty important if you're planning to use one with an AE, as you don't want to exceed that +5v limitation; the Clockworks lets you do that AND also send higher-level pulses (such as the also-common +8v) from the same device without any ancillary devices. All you need is a cheap multimeter (which, if you're doing electronic music, you'd BETTER have on hand!) to get the levels set, and there you are!
