As there are a lot of new modules since the last time I put an order, I was about to get a big order with most of the modules I don't have plus some extra. And some patche wires, never enough wires. The thing is my case is full so I need to get another one. But, I have an old one, from 2018 so there is no ribbon cable to connect two case together as the new one permit, meaning i'll need to get the RACKLINK module.
But here is the thing, wouldn't it be better to get 2 of the new cases and get rid of the old one instead of having a RACKLINK and lost 1U on each case? I think getting 2 news cases would be better, as they also can be connected with the hinge thingy. But i'd like your opinion on the matter. Other question, is the ribbon cable included with the cas or should I get one (or two if two rows?) in addition?

Actually, the Racklink isn't the magic bullet here. Nor is moving to a new version of the case. All you need to do is to make sure that you've got a common ground between the cases, then patch as usual. And that's easy enough, since several AE modules have ground patchpoints (MASTER, POWER, USB).

The cases are cheap enough that that's what I ended up doing as well is buying new cases. Just make sure that you swap out for a new Master module as well since the new cases don't have the power connector on the side for the AC adapter.

But I still need to connect bothe case together, isn't it? and for that I can see only the RACKLINK or the connector included with the new cases, right? Otherwise the modules won't be powered, or am I dumb and I miss something?
Hum, I didn't thought about that... it changes everything.

I was asking myself the same question some time ago. two things helped me to deceide: money and functionality of the longer linking cable. I found used case (old type) so it was cheaper than buying two new ones plus new Master module fitting the cases. Plus I wanted to mount my two cases into travel case which was more convinient with longer ribbon cable so for these reasons I ended with Racklink and I don't regret

Well, if the problem is power, then yes, you'll need the RACKLINK pair...OR you could just as easily put a POWER or MASTER (really, the POWER is fine) in the new cab, then just connect one cab ground to the other. Frankly, this latter idea seems right...if you go with the MASTER, you'll get another channel of MIDI along with the power and I/O. But the POWER takes up less space. Either of these are "cleaner" as far as cable sprawl goes. But if you need the CV and G/T busses, you're back to the RACKLINK again. It really depends on how you're used to patching (using "hidden" backplane busses, or just straight-out patching everything up front).
