Hey! Hope all's well. One of those annoying ideas came to me last night, which I can't get out of my head. I had a thought that the 4IO module paired with a MIXER4-4 would be an ideal way to integrate different gear during a live set. I have a triple Volca stand (drums and sample, waiting to get my hands on an FM!) which would feed nicely into the 4IO, and then be able to use inside the AE system. Does anyone use the AE in this way? Almost like a master mixer, being able to play with different synth sounds while inside the system - it'd save me having to get a Behringer unit and mean live jams would be so easy to record! Would a 2SIGNALAMP be required, or is line loud enough?

Would a 2SIGNALAMP be required, or is line loud enough? Are you looking to manipulate the audio from the other devices (e.g. filter or envelope shape) and then combine/mix the output as a feed out the AE Modular...? I have fed audio into the AE in that way and, yes, I had to use the 2SIGNALAMP. If you're simply looking to mix audio, I would recommend an external mixer. Much easier to control (and with the gain more controllable), especially live where things get hectic and you need clarity of layout (IMO, and from experience). Also, adding effects across a mixer bus is more controllable than trying to set up a similar system within the AE - at least untl we have some extra promised modules. The Wonkystuff Matrix Mixer does allow things to get interesting though. Maybe I'm "old school", but I let my sound sources produce sound and I let my mixers and effects do their job to the overall sound - certainly live. Other views/experiences are available I've played a few gigs and I'm pretty laid-back, and it still gets exciting when something doesn't quite do what you expect. Now, I always have a huge great lump of sample waiting that I can fire in should it all go bad. That gives me time to fault-find and repair/wave goodbye.

I haven't used AEM for tweaking external sounds (except for the radio) yet, but will try it with volca FM (inspired by new korg Opsix synth) to check how it sounds with some filters. From my experience audio out is perfectly fine to record without 2SIGNALAMP.

4I/O is great for audio, to be sure...but for CV and mod signals, here's what I use: www.perfectcircuit.com/soundmachines-ns1-nanobridge.html Protected outputs that are constrained to the AE's internal 5V reference, too, so when using the "protected" side, you won't exceed +5 and can't go below 0. Cheap, too!

Cheers! Yeah that's basically the idea - being able to use AE effects with it and mix all inside one box. I'm still giving it a bit of thought, I reckon it'd save a fair bit of space/hassle/money instead of a dedicated mixing board.

I just ordered a Microgranny there other day with this very idea in mind. The AE paradigm may not be the best out most flexible, but it's convenient to work all inside one system, and having access to the resoverb for sample mangling seems like a dream routing.
