hello everyone i am still having trouble getting a note to start and stop using a midi kybd. i took the advice of everybody and looked again at the quick start guide the examples are all based around drone sounds and this is not what i want to do also when you dont know what you are doing (me) it is bad for your ears i hope someone can help me thanks

Could you make a video showing your patch? Might help to get better feedback.
Since I don't really know what advice have been given a start could be to check if you can see the gate led (on the master module) when pressing a key on your keyboard? If so, use this gate to control the vca where your audio is going through. Or just use it to trigger an envelop and use the decay to have the note as short as you want (envelop controlling the vca down the line).

Might be helpful to list all the modules you have in your rack as I believe you said it was built from parts rather than being a starter rack. That way we know what you have to work with.
Does sound like maybe you're lacking a VCA in your patch... VCA is the classic way to obtain a start-stop sound rather than a constant drone.

This does seem to be the thing that constantly trips up people who are used to having the envelope shaping already hard-wired into the audio chain. Of course, my favourite piece of advice comes from the original ARP 2600 Manual (which I have been reading avidly recently).

thankyou guys for your help my system is alot smaller than 5th volt i did have to add another lead from the vca to the master module because in the video there appeared to be no lead coming from the master out, i am sure iam in more trouble when i try to add a filter and lfo! ha ha ! for the record i am running master-2OSC/d -VCO-WASP FILTER- 2VCA-NOISE-2S&H-2ENV-2LFO-SEQ16-MIXER4-4 thats it i have 5 slots left thanks everyone once again for your patience and time

If you have a starter rack you would instead run from the Mixer to the Master module and take the audio out of that.

thankyou i will look at it , by the way i did manage to get a basic sound and then i had a bit of luck and by total accident i managed to patch in my filter and lfo! but ended up with my original problem back again the dreaded DRONE! thankyouagain for your help
