Hi, everyone! Hope we're all doing well!
I've been thinking recently about building a box/case to contain my AE Modular rack. I love the low profile of the AE Modular, don't get me wrong, but I would love to have it stand upright in a sturdy box, similar to most Eurorack cases. A nice, simple, sturdy wooden case with nice rubber feet. You could easily remove the rack, as it would be attached to the case via the bilts through the holes on the red acrylic cheeks, so removing modules, tuning oscillators, etc, wouldn't be much extra effort. Maybe it could be open at the back...?
With a case like this, it would be easy to install a spring reverb tank (or several!) inside, and you could put stuff on top of the case, like pedals or other synthesisers, etc. I do like the idea of also incorporating some way of storing cables on/in the case.
As there would be a lot of free space inside the box, due to the actual AE rack being so shallow, you could install drawers for things like power banks, USB lamps, screws, bolts, spacers, blank panels, etc.
I thought that it might be a shame to then have to scrap it and build a new one if I got a second rack or a bigger rack, but they could be stackable with the right accomodations for linking racks together. I quite like the idea of having a few SR2 racks encased in nice wooden boxes all perched on top of each other and patched together. Gives me Roland System 100m vibes.
It's not a fully fleshed out idea yet, but I wanted to float it and see what you may all suggest. Maybe someone has already tried this! I'd love to see.

I've been thinking of doing a similar thing, and have been looking at hacking something together using some mounting rails and M2.5 threaded strips, which will screw right into a wooden case. These are widely used in Eurorack case construction, I'm thinking the only thing that needs to change is the height, which could be using the bare rails instead of rails+wings and screwing the rails directly into the wood of the case. I've got a spare set of rails + threaded strips I'm going to try this with so will report back if I get something working

Ah! So would you be mounting the modules themselves in your case, bypassing the AE rack completely?

would love to see the outcome of these DIY cases I'm thinking of doing something similar using some old pallet wood I have lying around

Always handy to have that stuff lying around! I've got some spare 12mm birch ply that I was thinking of using!
