I am attempting to record audio on my iPad without a proper audio interface. To do this I've made a cord that splits the the headphones and the microphone into seperate jacks.
Plugging a microphone into this Jack results in audio being captured on the iPad without issue. Plugging AEM from Audio I/O results in the iPad switching between the internal microphone and the AEM a few times before falling back to the internal microphone.
I haven't checked other input sources yet, but figured I'd just ask if anyone might know why this would be and if they have any ideas on how I might be able to solve it.
Thanks!

I had success using an irig v1 guitar interface thing running into garageband on the ipad. Cost me about $4 to grab one off the internets. Only one line in, but you can use headphones with it simultaneously. I imagine you could be having issues because the ipad expects a trrs jack for mic and headphones (assuming you haven't made one of those of course)? I'm not sure which way the signal should be split though, so I could be wrong about that.

I never had any luck recording sound into either iPhones or Android phones via the headphone/microphone jack. I'm using a cheap Behringer UCA202 USB audio interface and the apple camera connection kit and that works really great and in stereo.

My iPad's headphone jack socket is kinda broken so I'm always using lightning connection for audio in/out. I'm using camera connection kit dongle with additional socket for charging, and the plugging into it any usb audio interface, most of the times - the cheapest and simplest one which has microphone in and headphone out sockets, for like 5 Euros or so. But with this also works fine a proper external audio interface or mixer which has usb connection. Most of the times using AUM app, where you can choose audio routing, but this also can be done in Cubasis, BM3 and some other apps.

I think I had the same issue with the cable which splits to microphone and headphone. I believe iPad doesn't properly recognise this type of connection, unless it's "Apple's" product - with unbranded gadgets and dongles it tends to happen, sometimes you're lucky, and sometimes not.

Well, if the iPad is expecting to see a microphone on its mic-in line, it may be savvy enough to recognize that the 4I/O isn't a mic. Different impedences, no connected phantom power (I'm betting the iPad's mic-in has a low-voltage _nominal_ phantom power supply), incoming levels are too hot (microphone levels tend to be MUCH lower than audio line level, certainly moreso than synth level signals), etc. Remember, the mic it's expecting is the crap-grade voice-optimized inline mics one finds on headphones and the like, certainly NOT a real microphone.
This is what the Camera Kit is for.

This is kind of a silly question but hopefully appropriately placed in this thread. I’m currently traveling with my Starter Rack 2, my Zoom H5N, iPad, and camera connection kit (it’s a legit Apple camera connection). It’s my first time traveling without my laptop and I’m not able to figure out how to record into the iPad while using my Zoom H5N as the audio interface. Feeling a bit stupid here.
On a side note, I’ve used this set up in the past and successfully recorded (again Zoom is my pseudo audio interface) into Ableton Lite, Audacity, and GarageBand. So cable wise I think I’m good, only difference with the Zoom would be that I’ve set it to iPad within the audio interface menu as opposed to computer.
If I try using GaragaBand OS on the iPad it isn’t recognising the Zoom or rather I don’t see any option for external audio (only external app). I also bought the cool program FieldScaper but cannot figure out how to incorporate the Zoom so that I can record the AE into the app.
Any suggestions greatly appreciated! I feel like I’m missing something obvious here.

morgs try different sequences of plugging things in. I just bought a Tascam DR-07x and had some issues but found this order of plugging worked most consistently: Plug the camera kit into ios device > plug the Tascam into the kit > set to usb / iOS mode > launch the ios app > plug the AEM into the Tascam.

And - there's nothing stupid to be stuck at some point - we've all been there I don't use Garageband, but for instance in Fieldscaper app click on Input button (on a main screen) and see if it shows any audio input options. Me personally I use a very basic 5€ usb audio interface, or Behringer's mixer with usb connection, connected to camera connection kit and using iPad as a sampling/recording and external effects unit - all these music and sound processing apps create endless possibilities for sound design or just playing around... Hope you'll find the way to solve the problem!

Worked like a charm! Thanks slowscape and ben. It was definitely a simple sequence issue.

Awesome! Did you use the same sequence I mentioned? Maybe this should go in the wiki (even though it’s not aem specific)?

Exactly the same sequence. It’s idiosyncratic enough that it would be definitely be of use to others, especially because I would be using a different brand of recorder and different apps so it would be applicable to anyone wishing to do the same.
