Hi All I bought the original 16x2 system from the Kickstarter campaign. Now i'm planning to expand my system (anyone who is not ? ) So i think it might be smarter to start the expanding process by buying the new 16X2 (or 20x2) case as it has the "hinge option", in stead of building on the old case. This way i can, as far as i can see, avoid using the link modules at some time in the future. Is this correct? I don't mind spending 40€ for a new case if it is a better and more future proof option. I could still use the old case for some DIY projects. All my modules are the originals that came from the Kickstarter campaign, are there any issues with moving these modules to one of the new cases ? Anything else i should be aware of? Merry X to all Mikael

Hi Mikael,
What you described is definitely what I would recommend too; the new cases are recommended for expanding the system, as you don't need the RACKLINK module. There are no compatibility issues; you can use all modules of the first batch in the new case. There was only one change with the MASTER module: The power plug is now on top of the module and not at the side. But the new case still has the hole in the left side for the power plug (exactly for your needs), but as a piece you can break out, because it is not more in use for current systems.
All the best, Robert

There's another benefit to going with the "hinged" dual case setup: the need for only one MASTER. The MASTER can power at least 80 spaces, and by using the little link ribbon setup that the new cases have, this gets done without the need to run 0 and +5 as part of your patch or, like Robert notes, having to deal with the RACKLINK ribbon setup.
Given the super-cheap prices, my suggestion would be to go with a pair of 20 x 2 cabs; one of the time-tested rules of thumb with modular is to ALWAYS have more case space than you think you need...because, eventually, you'll need ALL the space! But keep the Starter case, since that thing will be useful as you expand for controller modules, a broken-out cab for module experimentation, and so on.

I emailed Robert a few days ago about a roughly similar problem, I think this answers my question too, although I already have the racklink module - I want to replace an original 1 row case with a 2 row case and connect to my existing 2 row case...
might be worth switching to new cases to get 2 more module spaces. :-)
That and more new modules, my AE Modular will become my most expensive piece of kit in my studio in 2020!

Hi. I also have a question about expanding ae modular. I started out with the starter pack 2, which comprises of the 2 row medium width case set up. My rack is almost full now and I am ordering more modules soon and will run out of space. I want another 2 row medium case and the hinge to connect the 2 row cases together. I take it I'd need two medium ribbon cables for the new case? What do I need exactly for power? Do I need a master module, the newer power module, rack link or nothing?

For adding a second two row medium case to a new style case you need to order the following: - 1x 2 Row Standard Case
- 2x Bus cable standard
- 1x Hinge kit - this includes a short ribbon cable that connects power and midi from the one case to the other, that way you only need one master module
If you have an older case which does not have the bus connectors or hinge ports then you can't use the hinge kit at all and you would either buy the Racklink module to share bus and power or another Master module to make it an independent case. For the latter you can share the same power supply if you use a power cable splitter that way both cases share the same ground which eliminates humming and other nasties when you run patch cables across cases.

I have the rack with the hinges and bus connectors (one to the front and rear) so I guess I got the easy option
