I moved the reply to this last post from NightMachines to here as it seemed like a better place. I will post my little drone machine within the context of something else from the AE Modular to make it more relevant. Of course I developed it a bit more and it got totally wild with the tiny modulations giving it movement everywhere. I had wanted to play with drones for a while and this has opened up a rich seam of experimentation. I'm not sure how musical it will be, but it is mighty good fun. When it was out loud my partner shouted that it was like being on the set of Apocalypse Now. I reminded her that I was playing with my EcoSystem (and put headphones on)
I also made a really interesting little synth using one of the Mutable Instruments ports (I think it may even have been by thetechnobear ) and that has been used straight away for an improvised Cathedral Constructions track (up to five now). I made the sound and quickly set up a sequence to utilise it - and there was a track. Great sound and with fast 'n' furious modulation patching it really came alive.
I really recommend the Axoloti, that little beast is certainly fun and the sound quality has left me amazed. For a very low price, you can have access to a very powerful tool that is currently only limited by my imaginination. Every time I think of something to try I have found a way of doing it. I wanted to transpose - I just mixed a variable CV with the pitch and it worked, instantly. The longest part of the process was working out what the module was called that I needed.
I've also learned how I can guarantee to disconnect myself from the editor every time Actually useful, but annoying when I was doing it. I also put my DIY skills to the test making a very simple enclosure for it - that was surprisingly gratifying and actually a really nice part of the whole process. I look at it and think, "I made that."
Next, I would like to get a bit more integration between it and other items, including the AE Modular. I find it incredibly absorbing and, as I have said before, I have to limit my experimentation so that I use the results in a musical (to me) setting. I know that I could easily spend a day just programming weird patches - and I probably will.
One thing that I would like to try is building a Mellotron (AxoTron...? MelloLoti...?) using some old samples that I got from Klaus Hoffmann-Hoock a very long time ago. I knew Klaus personally as we were playing in the same "scene", which was very small. He was a real name, with some real history and now sadly departed. He is very much missed. I still remember him preparing for a concert at Jodrell Bank with some interesting smoking materials.
I will make a note when I use the Axoloti within my AE Modular submissions... now I have to get some work done to make time for this week's Patch Challenge
Back to work... and maybe I will render a quick mix of that track for Soundcloud...
