Things like this make me so glad I didn't stay in the US; little or no job protection.... Worker's rights in the UK have been eroded (sick pay anyone?) but still light years ahead of this shit.... There is no sick pay in UK?!

There is no sick pay in UK?! It depends on your employment contract - most managers etc. get it but very few labourers/workers. There is Statuatory sick pay but it a pitiful amount - I work part time and just over minimum wage and it doesn't come close to what I earn! It also doesn't start until up to a week after you are off.... One of things that has changed in the UK I really dislike, and I was a manager until my (semi-) retirement!

but but "right to work."
sigh. yeah. When I talk to friends in the UK who are like "Oh, my contract says they can't lay me off without giving me 3 months severance" I become seriously jealous. (Having to give 3 months notice to leave is a bit of a drawback, but still.)
