Hello, What would I need in AE to replace a Behringer Neutron and Crave? Thanks
Why do you want to replace them? Both are great sounding synthesizers. I have the Neutron and absolutely love its sound. However to answer your question: both are relatively simple classic subtractive synths so for the Neutron you would need: * Two oscillators, eg. 2OSC/d * Two envelope generators, eg. 2ENV * A filter, eg. SV Filter * A VCA, eg. 2VCA * A delay, eg. DELAY * An LFO, eg. 2LFO * A Mixer and Attenuator, eg. 4ATT/MIX * MIDI input, eg. MASTER I/O The Crave has a very similar structure but only one oscillator, one envelope and no delay. However it has a step sequencer: * Step sequencer, eg. SEQ16 or SEQ8 Basically you could just buy the Starter System 2 and that gives you a complete modular synth with the same building blocks as both the Neutron and the Crave and more!

Thank you, yes it seems the starter rack 2 would be the practical way to replace them. To buy it I would need to sell them and also I don't have the space for them and the AE Modular. Part of my interest in buying the AE would be to tidy up my music space and also have the opportunity to expand the possibilities to create new sounds by adding the modules I am interested in. I do wish there was better midi implementation though. If I had a lot of money that would help too.

I feel you, for me it is often 'replacing' something for the same reasons, money & space.. Good thing about AE is that it cannot be understated how small it is. I think it is by far the most space efficient option to do modular. Agree on the MIDI implementation, although there are a lot of MIDI things coming out of the pipeline (both Robert from TW & Wonkystuff are working on different MIDI modules). They are not here yet, and AE has learned me to be patient

They are not here yet, and AE has learned me to be patient I agree about Midi, my patience running out was one of the reasons I decided to buy the Akai MPC1 last year, as the Midi module "promised" for Jan 22 had not appeared. That purchase has been great as so flexible on the CV/gate options to the AE (8 available ). Having said that I am really interested in the Wonkystuff midi modules shown in the Superbooth video, exactly what modular should have to me . Modules also help with the cost/space issue....
uddhava I'm not sure you would save any space having an AE instead of the Neutron and Crave, but you would definitely gain in flexibility and possibilities, including expansion. One suggestion is that the Neutron could be put in a 19" rack with Behringer Rack ears - make sure you get the right size. As soon as you can stack things you gain loads of space! You have my sympathies re money; it took years to build up my studio, the key is buying gear you really need rather than want.... I have only sold 3 things I've bought over the years, and made a good profit on 2 of them! Also worth considering 2nd hand where you can - hard with AE however . Rather than buy the full Starter System in 1 go, you could buy a case, master module and a few modules to get you going, then you can really fine tune what you want your system to be as you learn about it. Just to mention, as its a budgetting thing I've used for a few years now, Paypal do an interest Pay in 3 option if you spend more than £30 (assume similar in other currencies); your purchase is split into 3 equal payments, one immediately, one in a month, and one in 2 months - great way to spread the cost, one of the reasons I've be able to do so many Tangible Wave orders! Whatever you do, enjoy your music making.

Thank you both for the replies and encouragement.
An AE modular system is attractive because of the reasonable price, small size and for the good and expanding selection of modules. I can't buy a setup now, but I am keeping my eyes open for any good used deals and thinking about what would be a useful setup for me.

You could also get the AE Eurorack frame and put it and the Neutron into a 2 row Eurorack system like I've done for this video:
