After racking my brain for a while, I finally got an idea for a patch challenge that might be interesting (hopefully not only to me đ):
Try to make something with the least number of modules possible.
I'm looking forward to listening to your minimalist tracks.

It was a nice read, thanks for sharing đ I'm still stuck trying to whittle my patch down to the bare minimum while making it sound interesting.
I did much a more thorough exploration of some of my modules than I would normally do (i.e. I wonder watch would come out if I patch output X into input Y, specially audio rate signals) so even if nothing comes out of it I'll still call that a win đ

Here's my entry, I challenged my inner maydonpoliris for this one (although it's nowhere close to the original đ). Patch breakdown: 2OSC/d provide 4 voices, MM-DIV for the rhythm, a 2ENV with 2 looping envelopes as a modulation source and clock for the MM-DIV. 4VCA using the gates of the MM-DIV for the voices and the Nyle Filter to filter / distort / resonate. So 5 modules (if you don't count the 4IO used for the output), it was tough to get down the count down but fun.

The exact reason why I eschew working with DAWs to make music. Too many options and possibilities.

I like the idea of this challenge. I will definitely try my hand at it once I have recorded my last patch. Too many modules is a first world problem, a challenge like this helps to reset your modular mindset.

cool patch challenge and am up for a go for sure. You have been posting some great music mathias and considering this one is with only 5 modules I think it surpasses that other one you challenged cheers mate

he he, i guess this is where we have to delve into Raymond Roussel and the many many constraints used in literature centuries previous to him .. all leading to the OuLiPo .. coincidentally started in 1960 , the year of this sited Dr Seuss challenge.. the OuLiPo has a music offshoot ( the OuMuPo ) but itâs not very big ... though in reality constraints have been in music for centuries .. âscalesâ are , of course, an artificial constraint in themselves .. and techniques such as palindromes, retrogrades etc etc have been part of composition for hundreds of years ,, itâs interesting the huge rekindling of interest in early electronic/concrete music ,, which was itself born of the MASSIVE constraint of having to use equipment not designed for composition for several decades ... we donât have that âluxuryâ now but constraints could be fundamental to worming your way through all the modular possibilities .. we probably should start our own league.. PoMoRĂ© , ie: POtential MOdular REstrictions ! or RePaSt ! ( REstrictive PAtching STrategies ) perhaps ... robert is already helping with the V7-case of course. recently I have stuck to just a cassette player through 1 (or 2) effect pedals to make recordings ,, though Chase Bliss pedals are already so complex it might not be an actual restriction ! itâs probably as much as my brain can handle at one sitting, I will get back to ornament&crime in a 1x 12 row setting soon and shuffle the other 9 slots around for fun.. I am currently in bed with Flu AND a sprained ankle ... so please forgive my ramblings, itâs a subject with long standing fascination for me..

I never heard of oulipo or ouxpo for that matter, a very interesting rabbit hole to dive into. I guess this must be where von Trier and Vinterberg got their inspiration to start the whole Dogme 95 movement.

I never heard of oulipo or ouxpo for that matter, a very interesting rabbit hole to dive into. I guess this must be where von Trier and Vinterberg got their inspiration to start the whole Dogme 95 movement. I never made that connection, good call. Guy Maddinâs âThe Forbidden Roomâ is inspired by Roussel , though more the end results Rousselâs constraints forced him into ,, a lot of nested stories within stories.. but itâs an absolutely mind boggling watch and can be seen over and over as youâll only ever remember about 3% of the detail ,, and probably will fall asleep in sections! his âSeancesâ website gives a flavour , it makes up a new short film just for you every time .. seances.nfb.ca/skipIntro it doesnât seem to work in safari on ipad anymore but it does in Ipad firefox when you click the full page thingy. itâs from 2015/16 and a few years beforehand in the making .. but you can weirdly see echoes of all this current AI gubbins in there i think. Roussels main torturous ârestraintâ .. and heâs doing this in french so imagine the headf*ck for a translator in ANY other language . first think of phrases that sounds phonetically the same BUT have completely different meanings .. iâll try make up a simple english example ..er say â Sergeant Pepperâs lonely hearts club Band â then â Marge & Pippaâs foamy parts dubbed âgrandâ â .. ok thatâs a poor example, but then Roussel uses one phrase for the beginning of a chapter and the other for the end AND then has to think up a plot line that can connect the two phrases , also playing other weird constraint games in the body of the text!! aaarrrgggghhhh! the end result , as you can imagine is pretty damn surreal and nothing you would come up with from your own thought processes. everyone in France hated him at the turn of the 20th century until the surrealists came along and said â thatâs OUR guy! â though he wasnât that keen on them.. I am flummoxed as to how such a technique could be translated into modular patching though!! and the results certainly arenât âminimalâ as this patch challenge asks... perhaps two recordings using exactly the same patch mapping BUT randomly swapping the modules!! but that would be a lot of annoying work.. perhaps use exactly the same patch diagram make a recording THEN just shift all the wires, keeping the same diagram, by one module to the right and see what happens? make a 2nd recording & mix the 2? anywee , worth pondering on...

Here is my humble contribution to patch challenge 28. I built this self playing patch using 4 modules: SEQ8, 2LFO, ALGODRONE & MULTIFX.

Really nice, well done trimming it down to 4 modules. I'm curious to know if something can be made with even less (I guess 1 module is possible if doing some bytebeat or a good sounding drone)

This challenge is really inspiring. Here is another patch, no sequencer this time but I think I managed to pull of some technoish patch with 4 modules without using the sequencer. ALGODRONE, MS20, 2ENV, and 2VCA.

very very nice! and creative def got techno happening. I'm currently staring at my system figuring out which ones I'll use. think I'll just start and see but you upped the game

You will need some clock pulse, some modulation(s) and soundsource(s) to get someting not too static otherwise you can just record the output of a VCO, one module patch much wow such minimalist.

This is my attempt......4 modules Sawvox 2ENV Kuzman Mixconsole
Was trying to get some sort of beat using the Sawvox gating the 2env. Sawvox was also the sound source through the Kuzman 2env also modulated the kuzman and sawvox as well as the mixconsole CV to create some distortion in the beat.
This was a 2 for 1 video as there was a question in another thread regarding the mixconsole so thought i'd include it in this and then as part add a very simple little demo adding an LFO to modulate the CV of the main Voice and then adding Reverb then Flanger via the FX Send/return
cheers

(headphones recommended) minimalist patch = minimalist sound : )
RBSS seemed like a great module for this because it has clock source, CV out and an audio click out all in one! I put the clock and CV through LOGIC before sending the XOR back to the clock in, to try and get some varied clock patterns. The AND logic and an inversion were modulating the length CV and chance CV. 2CVTOOL is in the chain for a bit of hands-on control. Sound is just the KUZMIN filter on high resonance, no audio input, the CV1 and CV2 inputs being pinged by outputs from the RBSS and LOGIC. Four modules in total, and definitely a good exercise!

Nice one, never tried the whole filter pinging. Would be an ideal little recipe for the cookbook.
