Hi y'all, I'm wondering if you could help me figure out a good drone setup, I'm new to modulars, so far I've been playing with pedals/matrix mixer/bastl kastle and t-resonator to create my drones (https://revok.bandcamp.com/ here some of my recordings just to give you an idea). I love drones, from Radigue feedback works to Drone Metal, so what I like is slowly build up layers of drones and drench them in reverb while modulating them.
I was thinking that a small AE rack (12 or 16) could do the trick without breaking the bank, even if I'm wondering if getting a 12x2 would be wiser for the future.
I'd like to be able to connect the Kastle and the t-resonator (for the latter I was adding the Stomp module).

- AE POWER
- DRONE 38
- DRONX
- MULTIFX
- STOMP I/O
What do you think? Am I missing something?
Thank you!

For starters I like my drones in many flavors and textures, but this setup looks very limiting to me, this would very quickly make me run out of ideas. A starterrack with a multifx module would deliver way more possibilities.

Mmm i think using 8 spaces on the two drone modules is limiting, you can get a pretty big sound with a few of the 1U oscillators! And leave space for other stuff, you mention modulation but there isn't any here... this is an interesting challenge!

Uhm you are all correct; maybe I should change my question.. what's the minimal setup you can start with to make drones?
Considering it's 450€ already, should I go with the starter set 1 and expand later?
Will I notice right away that's I'm missing VCOs? (I can eventually still use AUM effects on the Ipad and pedals and wait to get the multi fx).
What if I go with: Starter Set + 2OSC/d + STOMP?
Or, any suggestion for a 400€ (vat excluded) custom setup specific for drones?
Thank you!

Typically in modular you'd build a sound with an oscillator, maybe a filter, and shape the sound by sending it through a VCA, controlled by an envelope. I think for these sorts of long-form drones (I checked out your bandcamp!) the envelopes and VCAs are maybe less important if you have hands-on control of the sound!
There are a bunch of different ways of going about this, here's one
You've got three different sound generators, a compact mixer unit, MODULATORS has envelopes, LFO and a random source in one!, then a wavefolder and filter for some tonal variety before the multifx. The Core.AE can be uploaded with different firmwares and some of them can do some pretty beefy drones! I think Wavetables is great for evolving droney noises but its pretty expensive so could swap it out for something else - maybe another Core.AE. Good news is that the Kastle is directly compatible with AE voltage so you can cross-patch it in directly with the little patch cables!
I'm not familiar with the T-Resonator, would that be your main audio out? Otherwise a 4I/O would be useful (there's audio out in the power module but it's not very flexible)

The starter track is really a solid and affordable way to go. Add the multifx and the wavetables module. Start learning synthesis with this setup and then expand. For slow moving modulation you should definitely get the sloth module from keurslagerkurt and maybe also the RBSS from Wonkystuff.

For nice evolution; the phaser effect stage outputs in the dronemix. Bringing them in and out with the faders.

I started out with a starterrack2 with a multi-FX (which imho is indispensable for proper drone/scape work unless you have all the right fx pedals already in that case get the stomp module) I'm not hating on the DRONE modules far from but they are perhaps more interesting once you have your basics covered like you do with a starter rack.
Checked your bandcamp page, nice work! you can definitely get those drones with the setups that are suggested here. Every work I put out since January 2021 has been made on the AE modular system, there is a lot of soundsc(r)paes and drones there.

Relevant link for pt3r's drones: soundcloud.com/deofolI agree that the starter rack is a great way to go, if you check out pt3r's stuff from 2021, its all mainly done with just the Starter Rack IIRC. Its really a very potent starter setup, and for me personally it helped that it had mainly the basic modules. It can be very daunting to have a big rack when you're starting out. Hell, at some points I've even ordered a bit too many of new modules at once and I was paralyzed by all the new stuff! I'd say starter rack + multifx is the way to go.
