Brewing is definitely not for me, but I'm a huge beer lover (in France I used to live right next to Belgium). I particularly enjoy strong belgian-style blondes and triples, and very dark stouts. My favourite beer is probably the Rochefort 10, followed by the Anosteké blonde. Nice! I would have once said the same about brewing/beer loving, but I'm a definite convert - I got into it in a nice way too; my wife made me a beer, custom labels and all, with a mate of mine for my 40th. My wife is not a beer lover - I figured if she could do it (and enjoy it), I could too... and after a while my perfectionist/ocd streak kicked in! I'll keep an eye out for those beers...

Ordered a small sample bag of each of your recommendations. Looking forward to trying something new for a change. Cheers. Do you have any stories of exploding bottles, injuries or seriously bad or good tastings. Exploding bottles? Just the one so far - not bad haul given how many Ive made. It's not too much of an issue if you sample regularly - if you realise you've massively overcarbed (as opposed to having an infected batch) you can gas them off. Saved a pricy (and very lovely) rum stout like that. I've had to dump one batch I think due to infection - not pleasant but rather than dwell/over analyse the process for what went wrong, I got back on the horse and brewed a load of batches without issues. Injuries? Not really - putting my hand in too hot water to retrieve things, hoping I could in and out quickly enough to avoid burns was a dick move, though really all my damage has been caused by either the effects of alcohol (misspent youth) or sport. Relevant now as it happens, as tomorrow I hope to get the 'all sorted' following an ankle op a few weeks back so I can get brewing again. Got some new kit to try out too which should improve the output and speed up the process. Win! Great average with only one bottle lost and that you just took the infected batch in your stride. I guess if your previous and post batches have been successful then best not over analyse things. new kit to improve and speed up.......nice. I would have loved a rum stout and Hope the all clear went well.

Personal favorite (amber) Tripel style beer of mine is Troubadour Magma. If you ever come across these, they are fantastic!

I've only been to Belgium once about 30 years ago so I don't remember much but what I do remember is sitting in one of those little craft beer cafe/pub type places with long tables drinking some local favourites. Nice part of the world.

The Sabro arrived today, that was pretty quick actually, and I have to say the aroma alone was worth it. Spent the first half hour just smelling the bag after I cut it open.
I did the boil, cool and plunger trick. I need to work on the bitterness which I'm going to enjoy doing. Can tell it would go really well with Sodawater too or something bubbly as a quencher. Just in time for x'mas bbqs. cheers.
I read hops have some cool calming herbal qualities too.

... Just in time for x'mas bbqs. ...
You just gave your whereabouts away. No one in the northern hemisphere in their own right mind would throw Xmas bbqs. If you invite people to winter bbqs then better get ready to be invited to a summer raclette evenings with gluhwein and the whole shebang.

I would deserve that. Sounds awesome in winter though!

Raclette yes, gluhwein not so much. Why on earth would anybody drink warm wine with an aftertaste of dentist sedative...

The Anosteké is brewed in the north of France, you should be able to get it in Belgium. I'd also really recommend the Mont Des Cats, one of my favourite.
I live in Denmark now, and while there are a lot of great beers and breweries, it's a lot anglo-saxon influenced, and I'm definitely more of a Belgian kind of guy.

Bitterness wise I'd probably add to cold next and see whether you want more - I'm glad you enjoyed your first round with it though, and yeah, I've read similar about calming: I read about a guy who keeps a jar of hop water at work to sniff when things get stressy... Haven't tried anything like that myself but who knows? It's a close relative to marijuana but sadly without the psychoactive agents. Got the ok to start normal activities yesterday so banged out a quick brew on return - citra, cashmere and el dorado ipa bubbling away as I type. Some great aroma coming off it... hopefully the new kit works as expected. Beer wise while I like all beers I tend to like the NEIPA styles more than anything these days. I like a Belgian but prefer the less sweet/alcoholic ones - it's not a style I'm going to try to replicate anytime soon, though I'll keep an eye out for the recommends in this thread...

sadly but would make my evening teas more interesting and definitely influence my jams! cool that you got the ok and celebrated with a brewing. good luck with the new kit. I've had a few now, added straight to cold, hot and in between. the bitterness is growing on me more. I'm finding its the amount I add too. doesn't have to be too much to get the flavour.

Yeah, hop burn is a thing - more burn when fresh. Might be worth adding some to water and fridging for a few days to see how that affects things too. Freezing even? It's well worth experimenting with. Think the IPA as we know it now (Hoppy) was derived due to hops in high amounts having antifungal and antibacterial properties - was so the beer didn't spoil over long boat journeys. You might find you can condition the hops in water for longer than you might expect to be able to. Enjoy the playing!

ah interesting that hops keep for longer and that it was how IPA's were discovered. There would be mutiny for sure if the beer spoilt on a long trip in those expedition days!
I did keep the plunger in the fridge overnight, took it to work to have at lunch and it still tasted fresh. unlike tea which would start to taste a bit off. was impressed with that.
The rest of the samples arrived yesterday so I'm flavoured up for holidays to experiment and compare.

Just bumping in to heads up keurslagerkurt (who I can’t find in the username list for some reason) and Gaëtan, I was also born in Flandres (French side) and partially grew up there, quite near the border. No wonder you guys are in this thread haha
