Hi guys. I caught a vid of Robert just sequencing his AE from a circuit. Now, I know I can sequence my AE with midi, but then I had this horror thought that maybe I have wasted space with all the AE sequencing modules. I know I have not, and this is why I am hoping to have this discussion. How u sequence whether midi, the AE sequencers, or is it possible to have both going at once, sending to different sound generators? Curious to hear your good working methods in whatever amount of detail you are willing to share.

Hi, I usually only use my SEQ16 & TRIQ164 when I'm patching just on the AE; if I want to sync to external gear they can be "off a step", (which could be compensated for), and are not as versatile as my Beatstep Pro or MPC.... The TRIP wasn't bought for this purpose, but it can be good to get get triggers more in sync with each other as they disperse over the AE... Having said that I really like using the AE sequencers, and patching on the AE has given me ideas I take into the studio. A couple of my recent pieces on Soundcloud came along like this,

I usually sequence everything with the AE sequencers and use MIDI to play over the top with my KeyStep. I also use MIDI everywhere in my studio, so I usually use the MIDI clock to keep everything in sync.
However if you want to sequence via MIDI, that's OK, too, you can still use the AE sequencers for other things, eg. assign filter cutoff for rhythmic variations of sounds, etc. It's just sending CV which can be used anywhere, not just for pitch. Also there's only one MIDI channel ... but if you want many different things going on, the AE sequencers give you more options.

So far no MIDI is used since everything happens inside the rack and recording is just a stereo out mix. Once I start experimenting with multitrack recording I will use MIDI to sync tempi and deal with start/stop signals.

Not a massive user of midi but I did use the Nornes shield to midi sequence on a track and it worked quite well so maybe one day I will link everything via midi.
If I bring in other gear it will generally be via triggers/cv through the I/O's
