Ok, frustration time.
Is there some simple patch i can set up to somehow verify that my Cirrus is not broken ? I spend 3 evenings with it, and i'm not able to get anything even remotely interesting out of it. Just gnarly noises with various variations of "reverb" Either i am doing soemthing wrong (absolutely not impossible), or there is something wrong.
Is there a simple patch i can use as input, and some set of parameter settings on the Cirrus that should give a predictable or meaningfull output?

Unfortunately I haven't been able to play much with my CIRRUS lately due to work commitments. However I found that the "rings into clouds" patch worked lovely in the first mode. Now if you don't have a Rings (this is upcoming as part of the TBD) you can just try to send any short "pinging" sounds into CIRRUS. Maybe make a bell by sending the FMOS through a short envelope and then into CIRRUS. The sweet spots are very very narrow and will take a lot of experimentation to find, but I did manage to get some nice granular effects that I liked even without the reverb. Also try to freeze the incoming signal and then play with the grain size and distribution. Overall as with any complex module ... it really takes time and also depends what you want to get out of it. I have gotten bird sounds out of it, so it is capable of making beautiful noise! (when it did this i just left in on in the background for about an hour listening to it as I did other things). I think i've played around with it for about 3 or 4 sessions total at this point, and here's a few suggestions that have helped me that i've gleaned from around the web:
1. In addition to putting audio in, make sure you're putting in other inputs for things like the trigger, hold, position, size, density, ect. I read this somewhere on the web and it seems to help the clouds bloom. Random cv, noise, and even patching the outs of clouds back into one of the cv ins helps things open up.
2. Print out a copy of the info sheet by rockysmalls and read that puppy, I took be a few times to realize that a few of the modes only work when being triggered, ect.
3. I have to try this, but I also read somewhere to try sampling different audio sources ( other musical pieces, random audio, other more complex stuff) you can save the samples to the memory and explore them. I have put a melody from the sequencer into it and i think that's been my best result so far but i want to try some other audio sources soon. Granular synthesis is based off of taking little tiny 1/1000ths of a second bits of audio and playing with them, so it stands to reason that if the audio going in is boring then what's coming out may also be boring. My least favorite results so far have been just patching an oscillator into it and trying to get something out.
4. I also read something about instead of using clouds at the end of a chain, try using it at the beginning of a chain and modifying it down the line...
Hope this helps, I'm still wrestling with it myself but I have seen glimses of the interesting beautiful things it can do and it keeps me coming back.

IMHO one of the most challenging, yet rich modules in the AE universe. I feel like I have not even scratched the tip of the iceberg with this one, only played around with the OG mode. Definitely use the freeze a lot, so great that you can sequence it, alongside all the controls. The pdf manual of rockysmalls is key to wrapping your head around this module. Many psychedelic night will be spent with this gem. I keep it somewhere in the middle of my signal chain via the wonkystuff mm33+ for that extra routing flexibility, works great in combo with good ol' Lofi DELAY. This has not been an instant gratification module for me, I guess most of us are only at the beginning of the journey with this one.

This one is a beast which needs time and exploration. One type of sounds might bring good results in one mode but not in an other. So far I have put it in the send loop of the mixer so need to be careful not to send everything all the time. But I definitely feel that with it. I went from so happy after the first jam with the flute into it to really frustrated at the second jam with just AE sounds and only uninteresting drone farts. But now I printed out the manual and was able to get interesting results again 😃.... It does need time and experiment. Also be careful with the feedback it can get hot red and stuck with the hold or trigger on.

One could say that Cirrus and Algodrone have the common element of surprise, to me, it seems like every user creates completely different sounds with the very same modules since they can be so diverse in their output.

Ugh my Cirrus arrived just before a holiday and then we went straight from that into some home renovations, haven't been able to play AE for a month or so! Hopefully tonight Want to get lost in those clouds!

So i spend some more time with my cirrus (after i spend some time away from it :-) ):
1) My Cirrus is not broken, my patience was broken.
2) The suggestion to make more use of the modulation inputs is very good advice. You get much more interesting / moving / alive sounds (of course).
3) You can spend the rest of the long dark winter nights diving and still not reach the bottom of this module.
