I definitely see the philosophy behind the two prebuilt systems, though neither really did it for me -- not for my personal applications, or my teaching applications. I have no idea what the logistics are in having these sorts of things available so this is a for-fun question, but have any of you thought about what sort of prebuilt system you'd like to see? I have a few ideas for "fundamentals" starters, one for music and one for sound design, and I think it'd be fun to see a complex drum starter (the obvious stuff plus logic, divider, switch, etc.).
For sonic arts students for example, I'd like to see something with 2 VCOs, a dual LFO, dual VCA, dual envelope, 2 mixer/attenuators, logic, couple of switches, meter, and the trigger module. Or a variation that swaps out the trigger module for divider / trip.

You can have the unit custom populated whenever you buy a Starter I/II. You just have to tell Robert the modules you want. As far as sound arts, the new student kit Synth Explorer would be best.

Good topic; thanks thelowerrhythm! Indeed, we are already planning a broader range of starter systems, dedicated to drums, sound design, education (our new Synth Explorer system) and other specific tasks. The current STARTER RACKs are based on the simple philosophy, to offer all fundamental modules neccesary to learn the basics of modular synthesis, which turned out as a good basis for many customers. But, of course, we have seen more and more users that already have certain gear and want to add AE for a special purpose. And, as funbun stated, it's always possible to get in touch with us to make some tweaks at the STARTER RACK; we are humans where every synth is hand-assembled and it's no problem to make individual changes.

That's cool! When you say drums, could that mean we're possibly seeing more percussive sound sources on the way? š

I'm more of a "big system that can do everything" than little dedicated system, but the idea to have a 1row with only modules for drums or bass, or synth or whatever sound quiet nice!
funbun I do enjoy the name "Drum Maechine" very much!!

That's awesome, didn't realize. I'll be sure to keep this in mind and pass the info on. I've seen the Synth Explorer and am pretty excited about where things are headed. I'm teaching two classes this Fall that will have big sonic arts components and hope to create some interest! In the meantime this seems like a good chance to see where everyone else's head is at and get some ideas. And also to convince myself to expand...

I've always thought it would be really interesting to have some more prebuilt systems. It's something we could easily share via the forum too with the Grid !

I've always thought it would be really interesting to have some more prebuilt systems. It's something we could easily share via the forum too with the Grid ! I've thought on it a bit more after introducing the system to some students, and it seems like there might be a notable number of people who want a different arrangement but with the ease of purchase of a complete system. Perhaps it wouldn't be too hard to have a few configurations available that just make it a little bit more accessible for those who feel apprehensive about ordering a bunch of parts they don't understand, even with Tangible Waves doing the build for them. Could be just cosmetics on the website. Common questions like "what do I need for ambient" could be answered with a "well, start with this" instead of "well, start with this, that, that thing over there, this other thing, two of those, one of these..."
Not really any affordable answers to those questions in eurorack. Or concise ones for that matter.
Again, I'm totally aware that I have no idea what the back end of making and selling this stuff is like, just interested in the conversation! I've been really enjoying connecting with older and younger modular users and introducing them to this amazing little device.

I still firmly believe that the starter rack 2 configuration, albeit not perfect, is a very balanced introduction in the world of synthesis, it really provides with ample opportunities to make electronic music in a wide range of genres without breaking the bank (immediately). But like any modular system it is a stepping stone. I will only buy these modules and then I'm set, said no one.

I do agree with the Starter Rack 2. It's very versatil when you understand you can do anything you want with it.
As for a specific rack for Ambient, or Techno, or Drum, or Blips&Bloops, it all depend on the patching to me. Sur if you are into Ambient, a reverb would be better, but you can do as much ambient with the Starter Rack 2 as you can do Techno. It is very daunting at first to understand what can be done with what modul, but in the end, the only barrer is one's own creativity. Yet, I think that tiny rack (1 row for instance) can be very fun if build with a very specific set up in mind (one for techno, one for drum, one for synth lead, one for bass, and so on and so on)

My long term plan is to have one rack of AE dedicated to percussion, so look forward to see what happens in this front....
