Hi everyone I hope you are all doing great ! It's been a month now that I have my starter pack 2 : I've been having a good amount of fun with it and also enjoyed meeting this wonderful community, here and on Discord ! I am here to pick your brains, to collect some information as to where to go now. I have my musical activities as composer and performer/improviser and, for the (new) modular part of it, I want to focus on drone music. When I went to EMS in Stockholm and spent time on their Buchla and Serge systems, that's what came out naturally. I am hugely influenced by Éliane Radigue in that matter, also Pauline Oliveros, Phil Niblock, La Monte Young, etc. Not so much into ambient music though. Anyway, for an example of Radigue's work : I know Éliane mostly worked by ARP 2500, mostly oscillators and filters. Now this is where you could help me pick up the most essential module to put on my wish list ! As for now, waiting for some $$$ from gigs, but I've put : - Drone38 - Dronx - Cirrus - Wavefolder (i love that hihi) - Stomp-IO (I have a pedalboard at home!) Also, from my experience with the Buchla at EMS, I love touch modules so the trigger is ready on Wonkystuff's BioT ! And : should I get rid of some modules ? I'm not so much into that idea, also because it can always be handy..! Thank you all so much for your inputs. And thank you for being part of this amazing community

I would add the Cirrus, the AlgoDrone and/or Grains and the multifx. These plus a starter rack 2 will give you plenty of drone functionalities.

girault if you are going to get the BioT from Wonkystuff rather than ... cough! ... Hot Air ... then i whole heartedly recommend getting the Matrix Mixer MM33 for complex mixing/feedbacks of drones .. you probably already know Éliane’s ‘Feedback Works’ LP? maybe ask John about the newer version of the MM33 .. could be £10 or £15 more but might make some difference ... though the old one at the current price is an absolute bargain. pcb’s are in for the new batch of BioTs so it will probably be only a week before they are available in the lovely new ‘Strega-ized’ colour scheme you might need to find some way to try out the 4 different types of filter currently available to see which suits you best.. if you haven’t already gone down that route..

Drone38 (x2 for a big sound) DronX SawVox
Cirrus Nyle Filter Phaser
With these modules, you can make beautiful drones with slight movements "inside" as E. Radigue.

Thanks everybody !
pt3r : that algodrone is really delicious ! I'll leave it for another round of order since it does sound (purposely) digital, it would be a great addition to "densify" the texture !
rockysmalls : oh yeah, you're right... the M33 could be a cool thing to have, I didn't think about it !
Jihel : You describe it well, "beautiful drone with slight movements inside" is exactly what I'm going for The Nyle Filter looks like the filter with more options. So, as rockysmalls suggested to try them, I unfortunately can't maybe I should go with that one, looks safe.
It's really cool to hear all those point of views

DRON38 and DRONX are a good start if you want to create some drone. Add a wavefolder, and you can mix it within the DRONX. The MULTIFX is a nice addition, but as you mention you've got a pedal board, I don't think it's a necessity in your set up, it can add a great deal for your sound, but it won't do something your pedalborad won't. Cirrus may be a good addition also, yet we don't know yet how it will sound (but we can already know it's gonna be amazing!) I tend to prefer the WASP filter over the NYLE FILTER but it's just a personal preference. You can also add the PHASER, and DELAY.
And my little baby at the moment is the WAVETABLES, this thing sound absolutely amazing I've ordered a second one. It is an incadible tool for your background droning with some subtle changes here and there
Please, do show us what you'll do when droneing with your AEM, I'm quiet curious!

That's a good point !
Yeah, I'm also looking at the phaser ! And the wavetable, I hear so many good things about it !
Ugh, I'm doing some test with modular grid and it feels like I'm gonna have to have another frame one day Oopsie...! I guess I'm gonna be able to get rid of some modules also (like beat divider and 2ATT/CV, i suppose).
Yeah, I will definitely put some of AE Modular on some of my next projects (got an album on the go with recordings from EMS at Stockholm... might put on some AE Modular into that !!!!!). Will let you guys know here for sure ! Thanks !

I would not think about getting rid of my midi clock divider, so useful for generating fluctuating pulses, the 2 att/cv is also used in 75% of my drone pieces, sometimes you need to massage those pesky cv's in a specific range. Multifx is one of the modules that surprised me most in its fx quality, whereas the wavefolder is that one module that I don't use and understand well engough, yet.
I for one am very curious to hear your output going by the references you mentioned. Welcome to the drone club.

I wouldn't get rid of the 2ATT/CV either. I have two of those and use them in mostly every patch I made. Would love to add a 4ATT/CV if possible I mostly use them with LFO. LFO goes to the 2ATT/CV and then to CV of a filter or PWM of a VCO or any other module you want to modulate, just a tiny bit to get mouvement.
For me drone is about subtelty in mouvement in the sound, so the 2ATT/CV are priceless for that

Thank you both for your precious comments ! I will have to find a way to make some place somehow 😬 that’s a future-me problem I guess
