Hello all .. I'm trying to join this funky community getting my first modular rack : a single 16 ' rack (for the moment) . I have a long experience with synths and semi modular synths (earned and resold yamaha cs 30 , mfb microzwerg, ms-20 ) , but it's time to go full modular and say goodbye to the Behringer appeal (neutron, etc..)
I have the opportunity to buy a second hand 16 rack with this list of modules (new versions) :
MASTER NOISE 2OSC/d NYLE FILTER (Steiner type) LP/HP/BP WASP FILTER LP/HP/BP 2VCA 2ENV WAVEFOLDER MIXER 4-4 HPAMP 2ATT/CV 2LFO SAMPLE&HOLD SLEW/EDGE Case 16x1 + Bus Cable +Original switching PSU +Patchcables 10, 17, 25, 40 cm, 6 pc. each +2*Potentiometer caps +DIY DIN-TRS MIDI Adapter (other than the one pictured, that one was for testing)
I would like if this can fit my purpose : experiment with randomizations and filtering external sources ( I already now that i will need also a second case, a 4in out, a Lo fi delay for fun, some cv and trigs manglers , the expected sample player and grains (if it's really a granular player) ..
Thanks for commenting and any hints... Cheers !!

That seems like a great beginner rack, you have everything you need in there. There is totally enough to use it as a sound processor : you've got 4 mono in/outs in the Master module already. Random is covered too with + S&H + SLEW/EDGE.

It looks quiet alright for a start, you have all the tool you need to do what you want. But as you said, you might want to upgrade your case afterwhile as there are some really really cool modules out there. Nonetheless, with this rack you will have a lot of fun. Plus, as mentioned above, with the master modules you have 4 IN/OUT you can pair with your Neutron or whatever else you wish

Looks like a great start! Only no clock divider for Running Midi in? Or is that taken care of by that external module?

Hello all and big THANX to you for your support and advices.. For my sequencing purpose i've got a mpc which can be very useful, but with no randomization at all , so definitely a sequencer or trip module with divider would be on the list ... I think I'll go for this module
by the way does th CC's be trasnmitted from midi bus to modules, or it's just gate and notes ? Thanks.

Another question is about the master module .. As you said It means that I could use the CTRL 1 and 2 to input or output Audio or Cv , or just CV ?
Thanks a lot, sorry for my newbism

You can both send audio and cv through these.

Yuo mpc will be able to send one midi channel to your modular the clockpulses of midi are way too fast to be useful inside the modular so a beat divider will be neede if you want to use the mpc as your clock sources. I don't think that the master module supports cc to cv conversion.

On the master Module you have 2 IN/OUTs for audio, and 2 IN/OUT for Control.
I only use the Audio one with my system as I do not mix the AEM with anything else, I use it as a standalone. But for what I know the Control IN/OUT are for CV, so yyou can use them with another synth LFO or envelope or whatever.
Let's say you want to use the 2OSC/D with the filter of your Neutron, you then patche the out of the 2OSC/D to the IN/OUT 1 of the master and use a patche cable from that IN/OUT 1 to the IN of the Neutron Filter. Same if you want to use the Oscillator of your Neutron to the AEM filter.
For the CTRL I/O you do the same but not with audio, but with CV, LFO, ENV, Gate...

Thank you so much people ! Glad to read you about the 4/IN out in the master volume ( I beleived there was only 2) But everything is subject to debate The good point is that , as these 4 in out are buffered I won't harm anything giving a try ( I have a moog werkstatt module that could be a super FM provider, as it provides 0 to 5 V output at VCo's !! ... The HPhones module outs can also help getting an "extra humming" output
For the clock aspect of things yes i will need to get some triggers and beat divider because for the moment I have only 2 LFO's that can act as clock... Maybe the MPC can do the hack of output polyrythmic clock with a proper sample at one separate output ... ( have to check this) /// I continue with my questions : is there a AE module that can convert the internal cv's and /or gates to Midi CC's ? Like mangling lot of controls signal then send them to a CV to midi , that could help a lot to interact and mess with the rigid MPC sequencer. For example Just assign a randomized midi signal to the pad or track mutes of a good old uneven pattern Anyway you can see i'm already passionate. Thanks a lot for your help and advices here !

Indeed, concerning the MIDI CC:
I use it often with my Digitakt. The MIDI CC 20 you send to the AE MIDI channel gets translated to a CV (0-5V) and is directly useable in AE 😁 so i can send LFO's, envelopes and even sequenced changes from my Digitakt on CC20 via Midi (no i/o needed). Works like a charm 😊

If you still have your Neutron I would keep it, as it works well with the AE. Totally get selling your MS-20 as worth silly money these days, but quite fun with the AE also. The other external synth I like with the AE is the Minibrute, gives you most of the functionality of the Keystep but a synth as well! With your desire for rhythms, mutes etc it may be worth checking the Beatstep Pro as a sequencer, although the AE's own sequencer modules can do a lot..... Enjoy your system when it arrives, it's worth the wait!
