Well, this is funny. I am just completing an online course on creating online training courses and my chosen thesis topic was history of electronic music and electronic music instruments... based on my research, the date should be moved back to at least 1876, when Elisha Gray invented the first oscillator (while trying to beat Alexander Bell to the telephone patent). And while the Telharmonium mentioned (1895-1896) was in fact electromechanical, what Bill Duddell found out in 1899, the possibility to change the pitch of the buzz coming from carbon arc street lamps by varying the voltage supply, should be considered the first true "electronic" synth, as all the sound (and pitch modulation effect on it) came from circuitry without any moving parts, electromagnetic pickups etc...

Oh, I should make a carbon arc oscillator!

Oh, I should make a carbon arc oscillator! If you could do that, I don't know what it would sound like but it will look awesome

Oh, I should make a carbon arc oscillator! Oh, perfect! I 100% approve of bringing a sense of danger back to electronic music!
